Brandon Jennings Rates Himself Above Ricky Rubio
Recently we've been batting around the hope that Brandon Jennings may drop in the draft and be available for the Indiana Pacers with the 13th pick in the NBA draft. Well, it sounds like Jennings doesn't think he should drop past the third pick, let alone the 13th.
Sam Amick of the Sacramento Bee has a must see post-workout video with Jonny Flynn and Brandon Jennings. Rarely will anyone outshine Jonny Flynn with live mics on but Jennings did so today selling himself while tearing down Spain's Ricky Rubio.
Q: Is it safe to say you think should go before Ricky Rubio in the draft?A: "Yeah, I think I'm a better player think he is, I can shoot the ball better than he can, you know the only time I have seen him do something is when he has a homerun pass or something like that. I think the dude is just all hype. I can't even front you know, I'm just going to be real with you guys."
Jennings must feel his workouts are going pretty well and wants to make sure he has everyone's attention. Of course, there's a couple of ways to look at these comments. On a positive note, everyone loves a confident player and Jennings is definitely that, ready to take on all comers.
But this video clip also reeks of serious malcontent potential. I just don't like the idea of ripping someone else to build yourself up. What are you going to say if you're not getting the minutes you expect? This may end up helping Jennings drop to the Pacers but it won't make the Pacers decision any easier.
Oh, and my love-fest with Jonny Flynn continues. His reaction is priceless as he realizes that regardless of how funny the comments were he was staying out of it. Classic.
Oh, and don't get me wrong. Jennings may be spot on with his comments but these players are in the midst of a long job interview process and I always take negative comments about a former employer or competitor as a red flag for weakness. Don't tell me what someone else CAN'T do, tell me or even better, show me what you CAN do.

Yeah...this makes me want Jennings less...
Jennings is basically a hypocrite about workouts. Sure he worked out for the Kings, but he bailed on Eurocamp and lots of other workouts.
You know who doesn’t think Ricky Rubio is hype Brandon? National teams that had him take on their country’s best players. That’s not hype, that’s skill. (Of course for some reason this logic doesn’t hold for Patrick Mills for some reason, which is beyond me.)

great fit as a player, not so much as a person...
Jennings sure does have talent. These predraft antics aren’t doing him any favors, however. Pacers aren’t going to look for players like this as they continue to try and clean up their image. It’s too bad though because I sure would love to watch his skills translate into a blue and gold uniform. Hopefully this kid can learn some maturity and grow into a successful player.

I would imagine that this seals the deal on Brandon Jennings not being on the list of six players that the Pacers are interested in drafting. He seems like the complete opposite of what Larry Bird and JOB admire in a player.

I read that in their head-to-head matchup Rubio was injured with a cast on his hand.
Convenient how Brandon fails to mention that.

It was his second game back from a fractured hand, which prevented him from shooting (he didn't take one shot)
Jennings also conveniently forgot to mention that in fact Rubio had still one assist more than him. And that Rubio only played 8 minutes while he got 22. And that his team lost with 2-3 teammates playing better than him. You can say it was pretty selective memory. He was the better player in that matchup, but he hardly outplayed Rubio or proved once and for all why he should be the better prospect.

I think I misspoke.
I believe it was actually a brace of some sort, probably not a cast, but fact remains he was playing with something unwieldy on his hand.

Why should Rubio get a free pass?
He should be competing at the same work outs as everybody else. Jennings just gave his opinion and everybody is in an uproar cause they may look stupid for sleeping on him.

I agree
At least in not giving Rubio a free pass. I dislike hearing a prospect saying “Don’t draft me. I don’t want to play there” more than one saying “I’m better than this guy and I don’t think that guy’s very good.” As long as the player works hard and plays well, his mouth is the least of my concern.
I know we’d all prefer a guy who can fall in line and just say, “Yes, sir. I am a good basketball player. I will do my best to win lots of games for this team.” and then do it, but if the worst thing Jennings ever does is shoot of his mouth from time to time and doesn’t destroy chemistry while doing it, I don’t mind that at all. Better than him saying, “I don’t want to play in your bum town. Get me to the Lakers!!”
But that’s just my opinion. Are we now worried that Jennings is another Marbury?
