A Look Back at the 13th Pick in the Draft Over the Years
[Note by Cornrows, From the FanPosts, dbcb takes a look back at recent 13th picks in the NBA draft. Serves as a nice little primer for expectations. 05/16/09 10:15 AM EDT ]
Just going to go back through the drafts for the last 10 years to see who was picked 13th, which happens to be what the Pacers will be picking unless something crazy happens.
1999 Draft: Corey Maggette
Solid player who is get at what he does: scoring, getting to the free throw line, and scoring. Also a good rebounder for his position. Will never be an all-star but a solid starter or sixth man.
1st Round Picks Afterwards: Artest, Foster, Kirilenko
Pick Thoughts: Good pick, Artest may have been a better pick in heinsight but he is crazy.
2000 Draft: Courteny Alexandr
Made no real impact on any team. Bust. This draft was horrid to begin with though.
1st Round Picks Afterwards: Turkoglu, Mason, Peterson, Stevenson
Pick Thoughts: All 4 players mentioned afterwards were a ton better than Alexander. Especially Turkoglu. The other three are solid bench players on a good team. Weak draft.
2001 Draft: Richard Jefferson
Another solid starter in this league for some good Nets team. Good slasher and defender in his prime.
1st Round Picks Afterwards: Murphy, Randolph, Wallace, Tinsley, Parker
Pick Thoughts: Damn good pick. Parker became a better player but everyone missed on him. Wallace had the talent to be better but can't stay healthy.
2002 Draft: Marcus Haislip
Bust
1st Round Picks Afterwards: Jones, Prince
Pick Thoughts: Weak draft. Prince would have been a much better pick.
2003 Draft: Marcus Banks
Bust
1st Round Picks Afterwards: Ridnour, West, Jones, Diaw, Outlaw, Perkins, Barbosa, Howard
Pick Thoughts: That was a BIG swing and a miss. West, Outlaw, Perkins, Barbosa, and Howard are all good starters in this league (or great 6th men). Jones is in the rotation for the Nuggets this year. Ridnour starts but is nothing special. A lot better than Banks though.
2004 Draft: Sebastion Telfair
Nothing special.
1st Round Picks Afterwards: Jefferson, Smith, Smith, Nelson, West, Allen, Martin
Pick Thoughts: Another big swing and a miss. Al Jefferson, Josh Smith, JR Smith, Jameer Nelson, Delonte West, and Kevin Martin all are good starters or great 6th men. This pick sucked
2005 Draft: Sean May
Can't stay in shape. Can't stay healthy.
1st Round Picks Afterwards: Granger, Robinson, Jack, Maxielle, Lee
Pick Thoughts: Bad Pick. You had some good rotation guys and an All Star afterwards.
2006 Draft: Thabo Sefolosha
He has shown some promise but doesn't seem to be anything special.
1st Round Picks Afterwards: Brewer, Rondo, Lowry, Brown
Pick Thoughts: Terrible. All of those guys play roles on playoff teams. Rondo is becoming really good.
2007 Draft: Julian Wright
Showed some promise but Scott has been really weird with him. He is glued to the bench for some reason
1st Round Picks Afterwards: Thorton, Stuckey, Young?, Cook?, Fernandez, Brooks, Affalo
Pick Thoughts: It is a little early to judge these guys too much... especially with Scotts handeling of Wright. But Thorton, Stuckey, Fernandez, and Brooks seem like much better picks now IMO.
2008 Draft: Brandon Rush :D
Played all year. Downright bad for most of the year although he showed some flashes. Downright great down the stretch.
1st Round Picks Afterwards: Randolph, Speights, Hibbert, Lee, Batum, Hill
Pick Thoughts: WAY too early to judge this pick, especially considering it was really the 11th pick (so you need to throw Thompson in there as well). Quick glance says we did alright... really depends on which Rush shows up next year.
Overall
There is LOTS of value in this pick. Lots of good NBA players were available at 13... you just have to pick the right one. A lot of these guys did not... counting Rush as a good pick as it seems to be, only 3/10 made what I would consider a good choice.
Pray for Bird...

Go back a few more years
And one of the greatest of all time went 13th. Of course, had he gone to school, he would’ve not had the uncertainty of coming straight out of high school and would’ve had the national exposure needed to jump up the draft board. Those days are never coming back.
Of course, it’s not like the Pacers didn’t pass up on him the first time. Haha.
