Who to draft? Steph Curry

[From the FanPosts, psvirsky begins wading through draft prospects with Steph Curry. -CR]

Judging by the first post, it sounds like everyone is more than ready to start talking about the draft and for the most part we agree about the needs.  Actually, no, we completely agree about the needs because they're just that obvious right now.  I'm going to start by profiling PG's so we can get an idea for how all the options would fit into our system.  The PG position is an interesting one because we have a pair of them that are both pretty decent but also have flaws.  The Jack bandwagon is getting larger each day but unless he turns into Billups, he probably won't be an all-star or anything.  The feeling I get is that we want a guy who is a real floor general, can set the pace and tone for the team and be able to stop dribble penetration on D.

I'm starting with Steph Curry because he might be one of the easier picks to argue about.  Clearly, some of his talents are special.  He is as good of a shooter from 3 as you will ever see.  He is cold-blooded in crunch time.  He's got the NBA in his blood.  However, he is somewhere in between a PG a SG.  He's not super-athletic.  He might be a defensive liability.

Star-divide

Alright time for specifics.  I'm getting most of my info from draftexpress.com - a great website.  They do new mocks every week or so and have tons of info on each player.  http://www.draftexpress.com/profile/Stephen-Curry-1170/

Curry is 6'3, 185 lb and he's 21 years old.  His dad was in the league and his brother was a huge scorer who just transferred to Duke.  Right now he's at 10 on the draft board and he's generally been within a few spots of there for a while.  Last year he played SG b/c Davidson had a solid PG.  When that guy graduated, Curry switched over to play the point and has done surprisingly well.  He averaged almost 6 assists a game, with about 29 points and 2.2 steals a game.  He shot almost 40% from 3 (down 6 points from last year) and 87% from the line.

There's definitely a fear that his pro career will be like JJ Redick's.  If he can't play D he won't be on the floor.  He surely won't be able to defend most SG's and with PG's, he's still a little undersized and not quite quick enough.  There's a pretty decent chance that he's going to end up just being a great shooter and nothing else.

Personally, I'm a huge fan.  He's the reason I wanted to start this whole draft conversation.  I wouldn't be shocked if he doesn't pan out but there is something awfully special about him.  When you look at this stats for this year, you have to remember that he was literally the only guy on the team.  Last year they had talent at other positions but this year other teams really keyed 100% on Curry.  And he still produced.  The thing that I especially like about him is his basketball IQ and his craftiness.  Watching him play, he always seems to be able to figure out exactly where he can slip in and get his shot off.  His high number of steals is another indication of that.  He just has unbelievable basketball instincts.  As good as JJ was at Duke, I never got that sense from him.  Curry just has something special about him.

I definitely recommend checking out the draftexpress profile as it is pretty extensive and well informed.  However, I'll copy and past some of the best quotes to give you an idea of what they think:

- There isn’t a player in the country who receives as much scrutiny from opposing defenses as Curry does. The entire game-plan of every team he faces revolves solely around shutting him down, which makes it a little bit difficult to accurately evaluate him.

- He’s one of the few players in the NCAA that you can actually say that the game will likely become easier for once he’s in the NBA, playing alongside better players and getting far more easy looks.

- The biggest revelation of this season is the relative ease in which Curry has converted to the point guard position. Still obviously possessing a shoot-first mentality, Curry has looked fairly unselfish running his team’s offense, displaying excellent court vision and a real knack for getting teammates involved (relative to the team’s situation). He does a good job on the pick and roll, and is a much more creative passer than we were previously able to see, capable of handling the ball with either hand and being very adept at playing at different speeds.

- The best part of Curry’s game clearly remains his perimeter shooting ability

- One of the bigger concerns about Curry’s offensive game is that he does not project to become a prolific slasher at the NBA level.

- He is extremely crafty about getting to the basket, really knowing how to exaggerate contact (some would say flopping) in order to draw fouls, which currently gets him to the line at a very nice rate.

- Defensively, Curry puts a solid effort in, but is extremely limited by his poor physical tools on this end of the floor. He lacks great height, length or strength, and possesses below average lateral quickness, making him a potential defensive liability when being matched up with some of the more explosive guards the NBA is known for. He is a fairly tough kid, willing to stick his nose in and take a charge, and also seems to have a terrific knack for getting in the passing lanes (ranking amongst the top ball-thieves in the NCAA in steals), being extremely intelligent about following the scouting report.

Also, there's still a chance that he doesn't declare for the draft, he's just a Junior.  I assume he's coming out but it's not certain.

As I mentioned

In the other post, I like what Stephen Curry can bring to a team. I just really feel good about his chances to succeed, or at least have stellar longevity with one franchise, even if it’s just as a role player. Heck, if you look at the Hornets’ record book, it’s not Alonzo Mourning, it’s not Larry Johnson, or Glen Rice, or Baron Davis, or David West, or Chris Paul, it’s Dell Curry that is the Hornets all time leading scorer.

I think Younger Curry has that kind of potential for tremendous longevity. Elder Curry was a player who in his prime, was a 15-16 point guy off the bench in 26 minutes a game. That’s tremendously efficient stuff. I wouldn’t be shocked at all to see Steph pull that kind of game out, which is not bad at all. Only knock I think you could make for Dell is that he was never a player that played higher level ball in the postseason, but Steph certainly has shown his ability to come up big in the biggest situations.

But ultimately, his negative in regard to the Pacers is that he’s a tweener, can’t be efficient as a true point guard and could be a defensive liability as a PG, and only fills out depth for a team that is already deeper than at least one playoff team in the East.

If the draft board blows up against our favor, guys we need and guys we can seriously use are gone by the time it comes our turn, I’d take a flier on Stephen Curry. You cannot in any way question the kid’s hustle, abilities, talent, and work ethic. If we’re talking character guys that can be productive, Stephen Curry should be one of the top guys in this draft for Indiana. But I’m not going to say there aren’t any guys I’d take ahead of Curry, though if it comes down to it, I’d probably take Curry over someone like Ed Davis.

didn't know Dell was their all time leading scorer - interesting

Although Curry is a Tweener, this year did seem to show that he could be a decent PG, offensively at least. He doubled his assist total without increasing his TO’s too much and did so for a team that has absolutely no one else to help out. You would think his assists would be higher if he had guys who could hit shots. On defensive, he’d probably be a liability, but he is crafty and he is 6’3, so it might not be as bad as it seems. My guess is he could at least play D like Ford but with more height, for whatever that’s worth

I project that Stephen Curry will translate about as well as J.J. Redick. I think he’ll have trouble getting into the paint at all in the NBA and that will negate some of his long range shooting ability since players will be able to play up on him. A great college scorer, much like J.J., doesn’t always have the opportunity to succeed when he’s playing against taller and stronger defenders. Also I can’t see him guarding a lot of the two guards in the NBA and having success. Imagine him going against someone like Kobe or even Vince Carter. That thought alone scares the heck out of me. I don’t think he’d be an improvement over T.J. as our point guard either so I can’t see him playing that position for us. Not that we will be in a position to draft Curry though since I’m banking on the fact that we will win one of the top three draft spots and thus have an opportunity to draft a much better player.

by ThirtyOne on Apr 8, 2009 8:53 AM EDT reply actions

if we got him, he would have to be guarding PG’s regardless of what he does on the offensive end. Unfortunately we don’t have a big PG to match him up with. Eric Gordon has been able to succeed in part because he has Baron Davis to help out on D with bigger guys (although Gordon has more size than Curry).

The difference to me between JJ and Curry is that Curry really had entire teams keying on him while JJ still had a solid team around him. Also, JJ was shut down in college by athletic defenders from time to time while Curry is only shut down by entire teams keying on him. Last year in the tournament he was scoring over 30 a game against teams with good defenders (Georgetown, Wisconsin, etc.). All of this doesn’t mean that he’ll end up any better than JJ, I just think that he has more of a chance at succeeding and that there were hints JJ wouldn’t succeed. No such hints for Curry, just guesses based on his size

Well if he’s guarding the other teams point guard who does our point guard play D on? I’m assuming at this point our point guards next year will be T.J. Ford and Travis Diener. So when Curry is in the game he will be paired with one of those two which means that the good two guards in the league will have either T.J. Ford or Stephen Curry guarding them? Wow either way that goes we are in serious trouble regardless of how good JOB thinks T.J. is at Defense. I’m not saying that Curry can’t have some success in the NBA, I just don’t think we will be a good fit.

by ThirtyOne on Apr 8, 2009 10:05 AM EDT up reply actions

I think the price will be too high. Jack also should be looking for a job where he won’t have T.J. lurking over his shoulder. At least I would if I was him. Plus since we didn’t make a deal at the deadline I’m assuming the Pacers are not going to want to spend money on free agents this summer with their new found cap room, otherwise they should have just made a deal at the deadline when they could have gotten some players that we could have used right away.

by ThirtyOne on Apr 8, 2009 10:32 AM EDT up reply actions

no I agree with you

I wish we had players that worked better with him. There’s really no way for him to ever be on the court with Ford or Diener. It would be a disaster. The only way he gets on the court is at PG with Rush or whoever at SG. As much as I like Curry, it really just isn’t a great fit with the team we have currently

Another great post!

I never realized he was doing so well on defense. I thought his size would be a problem but when I think about it quick feet make good defenders. Dell Curry had some girth on both his sons but was no hulk. Anyway, If the Pacers are stuck picking between 10-15 and were to take Steph Curry I wouldn’t be disappointed on draft night at all. I
hate to say it but I would rate Ty Lawson ahead of Steph just because he is more in the mold of a Chris Paul and a true PG although Curry has made the transition smoothly.

as special as curry could be

Lawson is definitely more of a traditional PG and probably fits with team better

I'll be honest...

I’m stuck, I do not know what to think of him. Probably one time when I am happy I am not a GM. I usually could care less about it, but I wonder what his workouts will tell us.

ESPN CLASSIC

Showed a game that Dell Curry dominated a couple weeks ago. Steph’s game looks alot like his dad’s and that kind of swayed my opinion on Steph and how his game could translate to the NBA.

Any thoughts about Cole Aldrich? He could be in the Pacers range at 10-15.

i'll do a write-up on him tonight

I’ll give you my opinion on Cole Aldrich as well after psvirsky does his write-up. I like to consider myself somewhat of an expert on KU Basketball players and I have a lot of opinions on Cole.

aldrich looked like a monster for most of the tourney, I hope he decides to come out, but with the lack of quality bigs in the draft I would be skeptical he would last till us. Although I do think he would be an excellent fit. Would he be able to run the floor with our offense?

Two Things...

One: I love where this website is headed, we’ve seen it grow so much and it’s really cool, props to CR himself.

Two: I just read Simmons new article on A-rod, and I looked up on the ESPN banner and what do I see, an image of Granger next to the ESPN sign. THAT was cool.

Draft Express analysis is questionable

Even though they do the job of running multiple drafts to give us something to read, the folks at Draft Express either have a sense of humor, or love to kick you when your down. They’ve got the pacers projected to select Ty Lawson at 12. His best case scenario is to be the next TJ Ford. his worst case is the next Jamaal Tinsley. That can’t be a coincidence, can it?

yeah cornrows notice that yesterday. not cool at all.

Curry makes me nervous

I saw him get shut down a couple of times this year, including once in person against Purdue when I was really hyped to watch him play. That may cloud my opinion of him, but it seems like he could be a nice microwave scoring option off the bench. If the Pacers go guard I guess I’d rather have a more legit PG.

Truly

I could see the Knicks taking him way too early because he would be an okay appeal for ticket holders and he is a decent fit in their up and down offense, like in the mold of a Raja Bell (other than the fact that bell probably can’t shoot as well, but he is a killer defender).

I agree with others that say he is probably not a great fit. I love the guy but on this team it just wouldn’t work at this time. Maybe if we had 2 lottery picks and he fell to the second one it wouldn’t be a bad pick. I see him being just like his father in the league…

Great post psvirsky, I look forward to others and more discussion!!

Interesting

Knicks taking him way too early. . . that’s something to think about. If they took him very early, it would look like typical Knicks stupidity, but in a run and gun system, Curry could score some points. We all know D’Antoni doesn’t care about defense, so that’s out. Plus, they would have a “Boobie Gibson look-alike” to pitch to LBJ in the summer of 2010.
