Deja Vu - Pacers look at Ty Lawson?
[Note by Cornrows, 04/14/09 9:14 AM EDT - From the FanPosts, Ty Lawson is up for initial consideration. Good timing coming of a game which saw T.J. Ford and Jarrett Jack combine for 7 assists and 8 turnovers.]
As we all know, the Pacers were awfully close to getting Lawson last year. Were it not for an ill-timed indiscretion with the law, the Pacers would have too many PG's and the Tar Heels probably don't win the championship. I've been looking at a wider variety of mock drafts lately and over the past week or two we've ended up with Lawson more than any other player. I imagine most everyone has a decent idea of what Lawson is like so I'll try to keep this one shorter than the others.
First off, Lawson is a bit short at 5'11 but is definitely stout enough at 195 to hold his own. His two main attributes are speed and passing. The guy is fast as hell and he can drive by pretty much anyone. His assist numbers are as good as anyone in college. This year he was at 6.6 assists a game with less than 2 TO's a game all while still finding his own shot for 16.6 points a game. He also shot nearly 50% from 3 and had a pair of steals a game. The guy can definitely play and be a big time point guard.
Some negatives. His shot isn't great, despite his 3 point percentage. Most or all of his 3's are spot-up jumpers and he doesn't shoot as well when on the move. He also doesn't have much of a mid-range game. While he plays great up-tempo ball, he is definitely less effective in the half-court game. His size could be a bit of a liability on defense (albeit not too much). Also, as great as he's been in distributing the ball, he had some pretty good guys around him to pass the ball to. I'm sure there are a number of other college PG's who would have similar assist/TO rates with that NC team.
I'll go ahead and leave it at that. Here's his draftexpress page: http://www.draftexpress.com/profile/Ty-Lawson-485/. Personally, I definitely like the guy and think he can be successful, especially in a JOB offense. My only real concern is that if we draft a PG, we will need to do something with the guys we have as 5 PG's is too many (including Tinsley and Deiner).
Quick note on his character, since the Pacers will shy away from these kinds of problems. His DWI last year, while unfortunate, is probably not an indicator of a bad kid. He was 20 years old and was under the legal limit (if he was 4 months older, he would have been fine). It was a mistake but not a huge one. Having read stories about his family, he seems to have a good background (military father) and appears unlikely to have off-court distractions.

Jarrett Jack might not be affordable ....
JJ has been tearing it up! …. it is conceivable that we won’t be able to match his offer sheets …. If Jack re-signs we we don’t go for Ty …. If we lose J.J. Ty Lawson would be an ideal draft pick .. I think he is going to be a great NBA player …
Yeah it's tough
I do like Jack but he’s been playing a little too well lately. If we lose him, we will almost definitely end up getting a PG because there are a number of good options available in the draft. Lawson might be the best of the bunch, at least for what we need.
It’s too bad that it’s JJ’s contract that is expiring instead of Ford’s. Ford has been good, but I would be much more content to let him go over JJ.
"If you don't [draft me], I promise you I'll come back and kick your ass for the next 15 years."
We need a PG.
Look Jack just isn’t a good enough PG to not consider it an area of need. As long as T.J. and JJ are back their this team will always be looking for a PG.
Personally I’d prefer Curry or Patty Mills to Lawson, but I couldn’t slam the pick.
maybe I'll do Mills next
I worry a bit about him. I see the Parker comparison and wouldn’t be surprised to see him turn into that kind of player but there are some significant flaws in his game. He has a high ceiling but there’s a lot he’d have to work on.

On the other hand...
Unlike all other players in the draft he’s not only played against NBA talent, he outplayed them. He was the best PG on the floor in Australia’s two games against the U.S. Better than CP3, D-Will, and Kidd.
As a Carolina Fan
I can’t make an unbiased comment, but I love Lawson. He made UNC go, he was almost flawless the whole tournament.
good pick with trading options
From what I have heard and read since last year’s draft speculations, I tend to believe that Lawson would be an almost ideal draft choice. In a draft where quality big man are rare, but there seems to be a better crop of quality PG, it wouldn’t be wrong to choose a PG. Pacers scouts have had an eye on him last season for a reason; he proved to be a winner. Drafting him, together with the possibility of re-signing Jack, would mean T.J. Ford could be expendable. TJ coming off a rather good season and entering the final year of his contract could make him a very tradeable asset. Last year Pacers allegedly offered Jamaal Tinsley to Miami for Udonis Haslem; Miami didn’t want him. They could want TJ, who is actively playing and in the final contract year…… alternatively, Kings also need a PG and could offer Kenny Williams plus maybe their other first round pick (#24). Of course, I am completely making this up, but drafting Lawson makes a lot of sense even if it doesn’t DIRECTLY help us with our problem at the PF spot.
.
Very well put.
We are kind of crowded at PG but TJ has a fairly big expiring deal (5mil plus if I’m not mistaken)… which is what teams like NY, DET, CHI, and who ever else is in the LeBron-a-bowl (IDK why I put an ‘a’ in there just go with it.) so desire.
So there may be a few options out there. Could be interesting.
Draft Express's comparisons really just turned me off to Ty Lawson.
Lawson according to them:
Best Case: T.J. Ford
Worst Case: Jamaal Tinsley
That’s horribly depressing to me either way.
that's been mentioned a few times
and it’s probably my biggest reservation, whether or not that’s reasonable
"If you don't [draft me], I promise you I'll come back and kick your ass for the next 15 years."
I'd like to pass on a pg this year...
And sign Raymond Felton while trading Ford and letting Jack walk.
Felton is pretty solid player right now, better than Jack and Ford in my opinion, and if the guy ever learns to hit a three (28% this year), which isn’t asking much, then he could become a very good floor general. Then I would look to draft Evans, Ellington, DeRozan, Monroe, or Brackins. If we are hellbent on a PG I think Jennings, Flynn, Curry, and Lawson all need to be looked at and we need to pick the best fit with Granger, not for best fit for coach O’Brien. I wouldn’t mind trading down and taking Mills in the late 20’s.
interesting you mention Felton
Bill Simmons put out his MVP column and had the following to say about Felton:
The guy I’d pursue this summer if I ran an NBA team. Ten weeks of trade rumors bounced off him and he never held a grudge. He has lottery pick pedigree (fifth overall in 2005), and if we’ve learned anything over the years, it’s that many blue-chip point guards take awhile to “ferment” (for lack of a better word). He’s one of the five or six best people in the league by all accounts. I’ve never seen a Bobcats game where he didn’t play as hard as he could. The arc of his first four years looks exactly like Chauncey Billups, and like Chauncey, his game will open up once he starts making 3s. Just a lot to like. Someone will steal him this summer just like Detroit stole Billups in 2002. You watch.
What’s interesting is that he could just as well be describing JJ (replacing the need for 3’s with the need to stop making jump-turnovers).
