nickname for Roy Hibbert
I'll start off by noting that I understand that a rookie who has been decent but nothing spectacular does not really deserve a nickname. I'm not starting this up because he really needs one or anything.
Here's the story. My younger brother is a big NBA fan but not a college hoops fan at all (that's what happens when you go to a school based on academics and not sports - I went to IU). A couple years ago we were watching the tournament and saw Hibbert play a bit. My brother thought it was hilarious because all he could think of was Dr. Hibbert from the Simpsons. Every time Roy made a play, my brother would do the Dr. Hibbert chuckle.
Now that the Pacers have him, when we talk about Roy, we refer to him as Dr. Hibbert. A week or two ago, my brother asked me if that was his nickname and I told him that unfortunately, we're the only ones that call him that. So the question is, does that nickname work? Do enough people care about the Simpsons to find that funny? If I start referring to Dr. Hibbert, will I be laughed at?
Just a thought

My friends and i since he was in college...
Have referred to him as “Old Man Hibbert.” Partially due to his old man mannerisms, Fully due to “old mother hubbard.” Thats what I think every time I see him.
Not Bad
It would really catch on if the announcers would say “The Good Doctor!” after he hits his little hook shot. It would also be awesome if the PA guy would play the chuckle after every bucket or block.
However, we may want to see how his career starts to pan out. I fear we may be calling him “Malpractice” if he starts playing poorly.
If I was at a game and I heard that chuckle after his big plays, I would be on the floor laughing.
But you’re right about not assigning nicknames too early b/c that can easily backfire. Malpractice is not what we would want from our 17th pick

Nicknames are earned, not given.
Usually when one earns a nickname, it’s because of an attribute usually inspired by some part of the players game skills or antics. Roy hasn’t really left any kind of mark on the fans with his game or his personality to really earn himself a nickname, except maybe the foul magnet (which is all part of the learning curve Roy. I’m not hatin’). Maybe not now, but later. He keeps up this learning curve, you never know. I tell you what you won’t see though is Dr. Hibberts laugh over the speakers. Pacers don’t have money to pay for Royalties right now.
haha
I hadn’t factored in royalties costs. Although considering how many times the Simpsons is on tv every day now in syndication, you would think it’s costs are lowered.
Of course I agree about earning a nickname. I was just throwing out an idea for if and when the time comes.
