Letter to Larry ... burn after reading

[From the FanPosts, Man of Pace wants to convey his thoughts on the Pacers to Larry Bird...and the rest of us. - CR]

Dear Mr. Larry Bird,

Congratulations, on doing what most of Indiana thought you could not accomplish. The basketball fans in central Indiana have come around and once again embraced professional basketball. The pride has been restored but passionate paying fans will only follow a winner, except in Chicago with the Cubs I mean a team of Rhodes scholars and myself will never solve their problem.

Star-divide

Jim O’Brien must be relieved of his duties in my opinion, feel free to disagree but let me explain. Obie as I like to call him has had a very difficult job placed in front of him and he has done an admirable job considering his circumstances. In 2006 he took over for a tried and true NBA mind Rick Carlisle who couldn't win with the same team Obie inherited and nearly took to the playoffs last year. Jim is a hard line coach very similar to Carlisle both guys have barley enough personality to be considered human. Imagine the person you must answer to day in and day out, win or lose, traveling, and practicing as an NBA player (you will hate to hear this word) you must like your coach.

With what has to be approaching the most losses by 2 points in the history of the NBA Obie has crossed the point of no return. If we can beat Boston and LA without Dunleavy (who Obie rates the #1 Pacer) it's obviously not a talent issue so then it must be a motivation issue, hell we lost to Washington last night. The Technical fouls in the last 2 minutes of close games, the sheer number of injuries, the lack of a winning rotation, and most concerning is the way our prized rookies Rush and Hibbert have been handled to this point.

Who is training Roy Hibbert? I hear its Mel Daniels now ask yourself does his game compare to a 7'2'' man playing in the 21st century. Larry, is the Chief doing anything these days? I would see if Danny Ainge will let Robert Parrish (top 50 all time, hall of fame etc) go, he knew a thing or two about playing the post for a winner. Well with all that speculation aside great pick with # 17 snagging Roy, he is the most promising player the Pacers have; he's a guy with size, shooting and desire to follow in the very large Georgetown footsteps that were laid before him.

In conclusion trade Jamaal Tinsley anywhere and you will gain another year of good will from the Pacer fans, playoffs or no playoffs.(Amare is available if you haven't heard)

Maybe a new shot caller we and the players can get behind similar to George Karl, Avery Johnson, could Reggie Miller or Mark Jackson fill that role.

Develop Roy Hibbert into the Hall of Famer he could be.

Hang in there Larry, Pacer fans are back now its time to win.

Uncalled for

While I do agree with some of what you said (and disagree with other points), its uncalled for to poop on my Cubbies. And right before pitchers and catchers report no less. Anyway, Hibbert looked pretty good on Friday vs D Howard, but the lack of a solid rotation and playing time for the rooks is frustrating.

on Obie...

I’ve been meaning to make a post about him for a while now and I’m glad your post will force me to share my opinion on the matter.

More than anything, O’brien just doesn’t appear to be a long-term solution. His career shows that he’s not a bad coach but he’s not a great coach. His style of play, especially on offense, allows teams to be somewhat successful regardless of talent. Letting the shooters loose from 3 is fun and when you’re hot, you can win games. However, it is not a championship caliber style. His best year, with the Celtics, was part luck and part having some good players who could shoot (Antoine Walker could put down the 3 if not much else).

At the same time, I’m not ready to let him go, at least, not mid-season. Throughout this season, I have come to the conclusion that I would prefer to keep him around until our roster is set to make a serious run. We’ve definitely got some pieces in place but aren’t quite ready to compete consistently. I would want a new coach when it looks like we’re ready to be able to take advantage of him. It could be this coming off-season if we make a decent trade or two and have a good draft. I do understand that a long-term solution at coach will need some time to get his system installed and to get the players to totally buy in to it. I just fear that getting the right coach too early could set him up for disappointment.

As for potential candidates, I hope we could stay away from the typical list of veteran coaches that have been average for a long time (Obie fits into that mold perfectly). I like Avery Johnson and I would also be excited for a younger guy trying to prove himself, perhaps from the college ranks.

All in all, Obie seems like a good guy but as soon as the team looks like it’s ready to take the next step up, we need to make a change up top to harness the potential.
