Should Marquis be re-signed?
I contest that the Indiana Pacers are a better team with Marquis in the lineup rather than Mike Dunleavy. This season he has displayed solid defense and an abillity to adapt to whatever situation that is called for on the court. Now the question will be weather or not to re-sign him at the end of this season? I think Jarrett Jack should also be in this conversation tbecause his season he's deserving and should be offered a deal to return. What are your thoughts.

Depends on the price
In today’s NBA, I think the major question is not “do you want this player?” but “do you want this player at this price?”. Taking too much salary on a particular player or position will restrict the budget you have for other players/positions. For the Pacers, they are relatively crowded at the so-called “wing” positions, as SG and SF now seem to be called in the JOB era. Marquis is a good player, but with Dunleavy and Granger being expensive, a rookie (Rush) having some potential and some cheap role players (Graham) available, it would only make sense to re-sign Daniels for something like 3 millions or less a year. I think he will get a better deal elsewhere, so I guess my answer then is No.
As to Jack, he is a restricted free agent, has played really well at times and I think the Pacers should just let the situation play out, i.e. see what kind of offers he gets and then match if they think it’s a price they can afford. Personally I would again go up to 3 millions/year for a multiyear contract, as in my eyes he is a backup and shouldn’t get starter’s money. I don’t think he will be offered more by other teams in these times (of teams lowering payrolls), so I guess he will be re-signed.

What Bondi said. I dont like MD but he’s decent. I hope Brandon rush can step in and play at, at least that level for us in the future. I think Rush’s D can be better too. But I bet a team would be willing to pay him more than he’s worth I just hope its not us.

mostly in agreement
the one thing that I definitely prefer Quisy for (over MD) is his defense. Maybe I wouldn’t value it so highly but for the fact that we have very little perimeter D right now. If over the next year or two we are able to get significantly better in that area (Rush, draft, etc.) then I would be more than willing to let Quisy go. The other big positive from him is that he is a solid guy who seems to be good for the team (not that MD isn’t too).
I’ll second the JJack sentiments.
Random note that surprised me. Quisy and MD are the same age, only about 4 months difference. They’ve had such different careers that I really would not have guessed that to be true.

Let him go
I have a feeling that pride will prohibit Daniels from taking a paycut to stay in Indiana.
I’d say the better way to go forward would be Granger/Dunleavy/Rush sharing the rotation 2-3 minutes.
Then hopefully we can sign a guy like Rodney Carney(Hoosier ties) or Rashad McCants on the Cheap to be the 4th wing.
Hopefully the draft nets us a
1.Greg Monroe
2. DeJuan Blair
3. Brandon Jennings
Where we pick.

As far as Jarrett Jack
I’d probably let him walk as well.
He really isn’t a prototypical PG.
With all the time that TJ Ford misses. It’s probably in our best interests to have a good backup Pure PG.
Marcus Williams should be able to be had for less than Jack will require. He was a lottery level talent who has been stuck behind some top notch talent. Don Nelson hates him and they have already turned down his option.
We should be able to entice him to sign cheap. Figuring that Ford will miss 15-20 games per year. Williams will have the best chance to prove himself here, than anywhere else.JMHO

To further explain.
Jack for 1 year option deal = good move
Jack on a multi year deal for big money = not a good move

We cant bank on Rush.
So far Rush has been the biggest surprise of the draft.
In a BAD way.
I’m just saying MD would be the perfect 6th man. He would keep the offense moving we all know sometimes the second units can get stagnet. MD would no longer be a hole in the defense. I love Mike and his game but at 6’10’’ with his athleticism he is going to have trouble guarding his position on a nightly basis.
by Man of Pace on Feb 23, 2009 8:15 PM EST reply actions 0 recs
totally agree
I hadn’t thought of it, but MD as a 6th man is very appealing. He would still need to pick up the D but it would be great to have an offensive sparkplug off the bench.

Defense
Quisy is a better defender and seems more versatile. That being said I’d say depends on his asking price. Some of you may disagree with me but I’d try trading Murphy and Dunleavy in the off-season as their stock is relatively high right now. Both seem to be defensive liabilities. For all the talk of defence by JOB I dunno, reminds of a “poor man’s” D’Antoni.
I strongly believe that defence is something that players can always control not so much offence in that there are times when your shots just don’t fall.
Opportunity is missed by most people because it comes dressed in overalls and looks like work.

i second the trading
MD is probably untradeable considering his knee injury and $10 million a year contract. His value was probably at it’s highest this past summer (although I’d be happy to do it for good value).
As for Murph, I wholeheartedly agree that this summer would be an ideal time to trade him. His value has got to be as high as it will ever be. In fact, his value may even come close to matching his contract, especially as he continues to bring up his scoring average with MD and Granger out. He seems like a good team guy and he is a solid player but I really think we could get some good value back that will either not cost as much or be more worthwhile long term.

HELL NO
Every single year up until now Marquise has sucked ass. Everyone knows the only reason he is playing good this season, is because he knows he is highly over-paid and on the last year of his contract. Hell until this season, Marquise had looked worst then Jamaal Tinsley.
I say let Marquise, Rahso and Maceo go this season then use their money to make the NBA players union finally happy by buying out that lazy ass over paid sun of a bitch Jamaal Tinsley’s contract. Then the following season, either let J-Jack of TJ Ford go unless they both get a hell of allot better next season, and make a big splash in free agency by going after guys like Chris Bosh and D-Wade to get the Pacers back in contention for an NBA finals trophy and piss the Pistons off showing Detroit that the REAL Pistons who’s fans are not convicts belong to the state of Indiana. + signing someone like Chris Bosh or D-Wade may piss the New York Knickerbockers off too, which is good since we true Hoosiers remember the good old Patrick Ewing Reggie Miller days and hate the Knicks.

umm
i hate to even respond to this, but, why would Bosh or Wade want to come to the Pacers? Whether it be team talent, money offered, locale, etc. there are better options out there.
And out of curiosity, what is it with your obsession over the “real Pistons” issue? Don’t get me wrong, I hate the Pistons but it’s because the brawl caused our downfall.
by psvirsky on Feb 24, 2009 10:44 AM EST up reply actions 0 recs
OK
1.D-Wade and or Chris Bosh would come to the Pacers if they did like the Celtics did 2 years ago and went on a spending spree. + Mike Well has said that Bird does intend on signing someone big in the next 2 years when Tinsely and a bunch of other over-priced dudes on the Pacers are gone. + D-Wade and Chris Bosh as far as I’m concerned have just as good a chance at signing with the Pacers as they do with the Pistons or the Knicks.
2.I say the REAL Pistons are from Indiana, because the Pistons origionated in Ft. Wayne Indiana and were their for 20 years. Then in 1957 Fred Zollner moved them to Detroit with out even giving Indiana a chance to keep them and turned all their fans into convicts (hints the brawl). Then Indiana went over 10 years with out any type of pro basketball team and only a farm league AAA MLB team. Then Indiana went 10 years with only a farm league ABA team, a farm league AAA MLB team, and a farm league WHL team (that didn’t even last 3 years).

Two things:
1) Here’s a great article from the NY Times on why players (especially superstars) resign with their current teams: http://www.nytimes.com/2009/02/04/sports/basketball/04lebron.html?ref=basketball
Now count on one finger the last time an all star signed with Indiana via free agency (you might not even need that one finger). Add those two together and figure the odds of Bosh and/or Wade signing here.
2) Change your “Go Colts!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!” signature so that it reflects your hate for all things Detroit; how their fans are criminals, their team is not good, etc. so that you don’t have to type it every time you post. Because no matter the topic, you always seem to include it anyway.

1 – the Celtics had a lot more cap room and flexibility to do the deals – they also have the most successful tradition in the NBA. Also, those guys didn’t sign FA deals there, they were traded. Detroit may not be likely but most NBA players see NY as a marquee franchise b/c of MSG.
2 – Thanks for finally sharing the history. Now that we both have NBA teams and have had them for a few decades, it might be time to get over it.

Summer Deals
Outside of Granger, Hibbert and Rush…both of whom need time before they can be evaluated properly. I can’t find anybody on this team that is indispensable.
I think everyone else should be coming off the bench . If we can get 2 potent offensive players who are committed to defence; hopefully Hibbert and Rush will be these two for the future; and stock the roster with athletic defensive minded role players we should be good. From the starters to the bench should be committed to playing consistent defensive.
However as stated earlier my reason for keeping Quisy over MD is that he is better at defence, more athletic and can contribute relatively the same has MD. However neither he nor MD would make me wince at trading either if a good deal came our way.

My Opinion
I don’t think Daniels will be resigned and I honestly don’t think he should. I’m not surprised that he’s having a good year since he is going to be a free agent. Anyone who doesn’t think that Daniels would be playing with a lot less passion if he wasn’t up for a new contract is crazy. And if we do use our cap money to sign this guy I’m going to be pissed. Again just my opinion.
by ThirtyOne on Feb 24, 2009 1:44 PM EST reply actions 0 recs
No Daniels is gone
I’m pretty sure now that Stephen “Just Shoot Me” Jackson, Shanwie Williams, *Jamaal Tinsley (likely gone for good next year), and Keith McLoud are gone, Daniels is next in line to be released. Since he was involved in that Club RIO shooting incident with Jamaal Tinsley and Stephen “Just Shoot Me” Jackson.
Trust me Daniels will not, I repiet WILL NOT be a Pacers next season and neither will Rasho since Bird doesn’t like foriegners and most likely Basten. And the Pacers will most likely use the money from Daniels, Basen’s, and Rasho’s contracts to pay Danny Granger and buy out Jamaal Tinsely’s contract (most of the money will go to buying out Tinsley’s contract, since next season really the only 2 big name FA’s are Carlos Boozer and Kobe Bryan (and everyone knows those 2 will likely re-sign with their current teams). Then, honestly next year I bet the Pacers sign someone big.

Bird likes foreigners. Look at our draft from the past few years and you’ll see if anything too many foreign players. Sarunas is also a great example.
by psvirsky on Feb 24, 2009 6:11 PM EST up reply actions 0 recs
Yeah But,
Bird does not draft foreigners in the first round, just look at all the Pacers first round picks since Bird has been coach.
1998-PF-Al Harrington
1999-C-Jeff Foster, F/C-Johnathin Bender, and PG-V
2000-Primož Brezec (Foreigner (didn’t last long), G-Jequy Walls (2nd round)
4.2001-Our beloved slow lazy PG-Jamaal Tinsley (oh well the Pacers should have drafted Tony Parker) (not a Foreigner, unless you count the times he goes over seas to smoke week) & Jamison Brewer in the 2nd round
5.2002-SG-Fred Jones (Not A foreigner)
6.2003-SF-James Jones (2nd round) (not a foreigner)
7.2004-C-David Harrison, G-Rahsard Wirght (neither was a foreigner)
8.2005-SF-Danny Granger (Not A Foreigner), Eražem Lorbek (F/C) (foreigner, didn’t last long)
9.2006-SF-Shawnie Williams (Not a Foreigner, a freshman, something else Bird does not like to draft, that’s why he made that trade for Brandon Rush in last years draft) PF-Alexander Johnson (not a foreigner)
10.2007-No Pick
11.2008-SG/F-Brandon Rush, C-Roy Hibbert (neither is a foreigner)
+ no foreigner has lasted longer then a year and a half since Bird has been coach of the Pacers anyways. Do these names ring a bell, Peja Stoyocavic, Sheronis Jesicavices, and Tabock? And the 2 foreigners the Pacers did draft were all Donnie Walsh, I’m sure Bird wanted nothing to do with them. I

You forgot
Trading a future pick for Stanko in 2007. Also trading 2 picks for James White (who didn’t even make the team).
And the Rush for Bayless fiasco should be a fireable offense in and of itself.

And that just proves my points even better
Bird hates foreigners, that’s why none of them have been on the Pacers longer then a year and that’s why Rasho will likely be gone next season. But Walsh on the other hand seems to like them, that’s why the Pacers have had a few on their team. And Bird hates trouble makers, that’s why after the Club RIO shooting Gun Jack was traded. Then the following year Jamaal Tinsely was told not to show up for training camp or any Pacers games, Shawnie Williams was traded, and Keith McLoud was released. And the Club RIO shooting is what is going to get Marquise Daniles released at the end of this season.

After Shawnie Williams got in trouble, Bird decided he didn’t like college freshmen. That’s why he traded Jarryd Bayless right after he drafted him.

Noted .. contract year.
It would be rediculous to not take into account this is a contract year for Daniels.
This is the 1st season he has been healthy in about 2 years for an extended period of time. Last year Marquis was somewhat buried on the bench behind and the then on-fire Dunleavy not to mention playing out of position because Tinsley was are point guard every other night.
I say he should be re-signed maybe even at the same price we pay him now.
by Man of Pace on Feb 25, 2009 11:43 AM EST reply actions 0 recs
News flash, IT'S NOT GOING TO HAPPEN
There are 3 types of players Bird does not like, foreigners, trouble makers, and freshman
Daniels has been in trouble twice since he’s been on the Pacers. NO WAY THE PACERS re-sign him unless Donnie Walsh comes back to the organization. And Rasho will not be back either, no foreigner has been on the Pacers longer then a year since Bird has been coach. Then Bird will likely use the money from Daniels and Rasho’s contracts to buy out Jamaal Tinsley’s fat ass contract and make the players union happy.
Now J-Jack is a different story, out of all the Pacers who are free agents, he’s about the only one I could see them re-signing. But I still would not be surprised to see the Pacers let Jack go, because since the Detroit brawl the only Pacer who has been re-signed when his contract was up is Danny Granger.
