Reason your a Pacer fan
I'm a fairly new commenter around here. I use to post a lot on the RealGM Pacer page a lot but once I discovered SBNation I haven't really checked it out. Anyway I was wondering how everyone became Pacer fans. I haven't seen a post like this and if there is one I apologize. I'll post my story after the jump.
I'm a fairly young Pacer fan. 24 yr. old College Grad from South Carolina. That's right SC, however my whole Italian family is from NJ and NY. Growing up in the early-mid 90's had me spending time with my Grandfather a lot on Saturday and Sundays. When I say spending time with Gramps I mean watching THE KNICKS on NBC. I absolutely HATED it...I despised it...so naturally I started rooting for the rival team and sometimes I'd get slapped. It was one fateful weekend in the 3rd grade I believe and the Knicks were playing none other than the Pacers. Marv Albert kept mentioning one players name and showing a guy in glasses in the crowd. I immediately became drawn to that player and the rest is history. The Knicks are the reason I discovered the Pacers and I couldn't be any happier.

Here's my story
Basically, I’m an 18 year old kid from California. I started playing in a youth basketball league when i was in second grade. Whatever team i was on, they were my favorite. I started out liking the Blazers in second grade with Scottie Pippen, Arvydas Sabonis, Rasheed Wallace, Steve Smith and Damon Stoudemire (who went on to blow a 15 point lead in game 7 of the western conference finals to the Lakers in 1999-2000 and lose. The Lakers went on to beat the Pacers in the finals that year). Then came Vinsanity and the Raptors who lost to the Sixers in a heartbreaking game 7 in 2000-2001, when Vince Carter missed the potential game winning shot at the buzzer (The 76ers went on to lose to the Lakers in the finals, getting swept). Then, the Pacers came along in 2001-2002. I actually don’t remember much from those days, but yes i became a Pacer fan. Then, in fifth grade which was a year later in 2002-2003, i was on the Pacers again. Then i became a true fan. Experiencing an epic meltdown after having i think 37 wins at the all star break, collapsing and losing to the lowly Boston Celtics in games i was hungry for revenge. Then came two years in a row of beating the Celtics in the playoffs, one year sweeping them.

ooops didn't finish
So that’s my story. I hate Detroit to the death. I hope their franchise struggles then we beat them by 90, setting the NBA record and lead to their extinction from the NBA. God bless the Pacers. We shall be back my man. We shall be back. By the way guys…… Maybe this migh be a nice read on Indystar.com It talks about our demise thansk to the brawl and stuff. True dat as they say. http://www.indystar.com/article/20091119/SPORTS04/911190459/1088/SPORTS04/Pacers-show-signs-of-finally-recovering-from-The-Brawl

Apparently...
me and RIP SHEA are long lost brothers! I am 27 years old now, been hooked on basketball for a long time. Born and raised in NJ in a basketball crazy family. My dad is still the biggest Celtic fan you will ever meet. So growing up he HATED the Knicks, so i HATED the Knicks. I was a Celtic fan probably until 6th grade. Once I really started following basketball, and not just hearing my dad talk about it, I got hooked by Reggie murdering the Knicks. I finally had my own team to root for and I was all in from there. There was nothing better than Reggie vs. The Knicks to me, and I cant wait for that 30 for 30 to start. So I guess I am a Pacer fan fueled by my Knick Hatred. (And yes, i hate the Yankees and Jets too).

Reggie Miller!!!!!!!!
The 1994 season happened when I was 10 years old. What basketball loving kid from Southern Indiana could resist that team of Reggie, Haywoode, Rik, Dale, and Derrick?

31
Reggie
Miller
that is all that needs to be said
man when I think back to those teams I can’t remember a single player other than Derreck McKey (god I hated him) that I didn’t like. I would play as the Pacers in video games… I couldn’t trade ANYONE. I would keep the whole team, play people like Haywood Workmen just as many minutes are Jackson and Travis Best. I would resign EVERYONE at the end of the season
Last time I played a nba video game… I traded most of the team. :(

you didn't like McKey?
why? He was an amazing defensive player for many years here in Indiana. I got my Haywood Workman jersey hanging on the wall

plus i remember him being overpaid but idk if that is true

Combination of greats
I can’t look back to one instance really. It was a buildup. I remember I was 9 and this game came everyone was playing called NBA Jam. I wasn’t really into sports at the time, but I tried it, and kept playing with this local team. My folks told me they were actually doing good. I was inquisitive. The time was when the Pacers went to the 94 playoffs and swept the Magic. I got interested. I remember the crowd going nuts and acting crazy after we beat the Hawks, the overall reaction from the community, people jumping around like civilizied animals on the news. Most importantly, I remember Mark Boyles trademark “Reggie for Threeee?!!!”, followed swiftly by Slick Leonards classic trademark “Boom Baby!”. It had so much soul and so much volume. I think ultimately it was Mark building up the anticipation with his crescendo of words followed by the longest one second pause in radio. That’s when Slick hammered down the “fortisimo” notes that were “Boom Baby”, and that’s when I felt a connection with the team. That’s when I became a Pacer fan. And then Reggie went ape-shit in game five of the conference finals, and I was a Pacer fan for life. I remember Spikes arms spread while talking shit to Reggie, and the look on Reggie’s face in response. They say a picture is worth a thousand words. That picture was worth 10,000 to a bright-eyed 9 year old. And the moments kept building. The next year with 8 points in 8.9 seconds, Reggie dunking it in Anthony Masons face, the Ewing missed finger-roll (“HE MISSED! HE MISSED HE MISSED! RING THE BELL BABY! DING DONG THE WITCH IS DEAD” – Mark Boyle) gave us more memories. Does anybody remember the Dutch in the Clutch game 4 of the 95 conference finals? How about the one where Reggie busts it with #23 in his face in 98? My personal favorite photo is the 98 semi’s at MSG where Reggie hits the three… right in front of Spike… in the waining seconds. Google it and look at everybodys face. They all have the “Ah shit, not again!” look tattooed everywhere. I, unlike many Indiana natives, have kept the faith throughout the tough last decade because I remember the good times from the past. I have faith the good times will return in the next few years. My only hope is we can renew the Knicks/Pacers rivalry again with Spike Lee giving Danny Granger an earful and… you know where I’m going with this one.

almost forgot
Those game would have been great, but I think the NBA on NBC (especially the theme) definately added something extra to them.

Family
My dad was a Pacers fan and told me a lot of stories about the ABA days and the red, white, and blue basketball, and I started taking an interest in the NBA during the 93-94 season, so it was a perfect storm. I’m not sure where I’d be, if I’d be a Pacers fan today, as big of one, if not for the 1994 playoff run. We need to get back to that level of relevancy.
