Game Thread #7: Boston Celtics at Indiana Pacers

Boston Celtics at Indiana Pacers, Nov 14, 2009 7:00 PM EST

@
Indiana Pacers
8-23-3
Novermber 14, 2009 - 7:00PM EST
Conseco Fieldhouse
Radio: 1070AM WFNI   TV: Fox Sports Indiana
Probable starters:
Rajon Rondo PG Earl Watson
Ray Allen SG Brandon Rush
Paul Pierce SF Dahntay Jones
Kevin Garnett PF Danny Granger
Kendrick Perkins C Roy Hibbert

The Indiana Pacers play the Boston Celtics tonight, although you'd never know it after listening to local radio and reading the papers this week.

See, there's this little football game in town on Sunday night and that is all anyone wants to discuss around here. Too bad since this is the only time the C's are in Indy this year. Of course, with Troy Murphy out and T.J. Ford doubtful the short-handed Pacers will need a monumental effort from their available players to keep up with the loaded Celtics, so maybe it's better if the casual local fans don't focus too closely on this one. Plus, the C's will be ready to rebound from a tough loss to Atlanta at home last night. Thanks a lot Hawks.

The Pacers will be able to throw a lineup at the Celtics that has thrived recently at both ends of the floor. The small lineup has Danny Granger at the power forward which has allowed Dahntay Jones and Brandon Rush to amp up the perimeter defense. It has worked well in the past three games, but none of those teams post the strong front court depth that the C's will throw at the Pacers tonight. Granger and Roy Hibbert will have their hands full with Kevin Garnett and Kendrick Perkins at the defensive end to put it mildly. Granger will need to find his outside shot in order to help even things out, but as last year's early success against the C's proved, anything can happen.

For a Boston perspective there are plenty of great sites, including Celtics Blog, Red's Army and Celtics Hub to name a few.

Leave your thoughts and observations in the comments.

On the bright side

We could always have more injuries. I guess we should just be glad we have Brandon and Danny going tonight, and hope Hansbrough can maximize his minutes again tonight, and maybe even take a few Celts to the bench with him.

We will need the kind of performance we got from Watson we got on…was it Wednesday? (so long ago!) Or see his defensive abilities against Rondo.

Man, this is going to be a really hard game!! We couldn’t have this game at a worse time…maybe later in the year, when we’re getting healthy (knock on wood) and the Celtics’ hearing goes out from all the kids’ rap music, we might get a more level playing field, but we’ll just have to do work at a huge disadvantage and hope the defense we’ve come to love the past few games does it job.

Probably aren’t going to too many games I’m this anxious about this season, a combination of having about fifteen offdays between games and seeing the team playing well AND getting a test while playing well. Let’s do it!

I’m skipping a concert and Jager girls at my friend’s bar to watch this game! Lets get it Boys!! We are still undefeated when Hansbrough plays and I dont think that changes tonight :)

Oh

I like to see Jim Harbaugh succeed as much as any blue blood Hoosier does (get it? no? :( ), I hope they aren’t cutting Pacers Pregame off for this Stanford/USC blowout…

But I guess they are...

These last five minutes better go by in five minutes…

Celtic fan here.

Just here to wish you guys a good game.

If we play anything like we did in the last 4/5 games (excluding the Jazz blowout), you really stand a chance of winning against us, so don’t be too worried.

Other than that, I believe you guys have given us a run for our money before so hey, good luck, and have fun watching the game chaps!

You as well

I hope the game mirrors last year’s game (minus Danny Granger losing his teeth), but we’re so banged up right now that I’m not sure what to expect tonight.

Man

They’re going to talk to everyone on Stanford…no pregame tonight I’d think.

Try nba.com

I know they allowed for it last year with only free registration on the site. I haven’t tried it this year.

Yep

Go to the Game Info link for the game on NBA.com and there will be a Listen Live link. Offers the Pacers broadcast.

Wonder how many are from out East in town for the weekend, haha.

Danny

Likes his matches on the offense end tonight it seems.

Hopefully he can take advantage of them.

Nice block from D Jones (I think?)

And what looked like a travel on a bucket by Pierce as he was falling backwards

"If you don't [draft me], I promise you I'll come back and kick your ass for the next 15 years."

by psvirsky on Nov 14, 2009 7:16 PM EST reply actions   0 recs

It's the first time I've been able to see the new guys play

So far I’m really liking D Jones and Watson. Both really active and seem to be around the ball a lot.

"If you don't [draft me], I promise you I'll come back and kick your ass for the next 15 years."

D.Jones

Has looked like this all year. He’s been a great spark for us regardless of what you think of the signing.

That's some good offense

notice the ball movement instead of standstill dribbling (Granger and Dahntay I’m talking to you)

by Tom Lewis on Nov 14, 2009 7:17 PM EST reply actions   0 recs

See?

You move the ball, you set yourself up for offensive flow like this. Textbook!

Danny Granger, it’s good to have you back!

by psvirsky on Nov 14, 2009 7:29 PM EST reply actions   0 recs

I mentioned a bad drinking game in the last game thread

Being taking a shot every time Tyler Hansbrough gets to the line.

A GOOD drinking game would be:

Taking a shot every time Tyler Hansbrough passes the ball.

If I have a peeve with him right now, it’s that he’s kind of a black hole with the ball.

Isn't it weird that this is the second year in a row...

that the Celtics and Pats are in town in the same weekend?

by Gwen on Nov 14, 2009 7:33 PM EST reply actions   0 recs

I had great plans last year

To go to this game and then the Colts game on Sunday, but I was in the middle of Kentucky on a business trip on Saturday, and the friend who had the Colts tickets had to work on Sunday, so I got to listen to the Pacers and watch the Colts on TV. Not all it could’ve been, for sure.

Tins with Griz

signing has been announced.

by Tom Lewis on Nov 14, 2009 7:36 PM EST reply actions   0 recs

I think that confirms

Iverson’s “personal matters” and whether or not he’ll be back.

by goodlucksaturday on Nov 14, 2009 7:37 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

you know

I’m actually happy he’s back playing in the league. Weird I know.

by RIPShea on Nov 14, 2009 7:37 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

Wow.

I knew he would be signed eventually, but I wonder how well he’ll do in Memphis. Has he matured? Will he sulk? Memphis isn’t very good and will lose a lot. How’s the organization? Is it stable? Will he get hurt 10 games into his season?

Will he come down with a sinus infection in February?? I have questions.

by Gwen on Nov 14, 2009 7:38 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

and Memphis is a city with lots of trouble to get into

Yeah

That was an uncomfortable little possession. It shouldn’t have been that hard for Danny to get a good look from him.

by goodlucksaturday on Nov 14, 2009 7:38 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

Not a lot to complain about offensively

Boston’s hitting shots, but the defense isn’t too bad.

Keep it up, guys.

If anyone wanted to know.

Still needed to T up Wallace.

Tins signing

At least on the Grizzlies official board seems to be met with some “whys?” but a lot of folks are reading this into dropping Mike Conley. Someone even asked why Tinsley was exiled, but no one got to back to them, haha.

by goodlucksaturday on Nov 14, 2009 7:54 PM EST reply actions   0 recs

Wow

What a series by Ford. Basically crawls the entire length of the floor and gets the lay-in.

Sweet effort TJ

about half the floor on all fours.

by Tom Lewis on Nov 14, 2009 7:55 PM EST reply actions   0 recs

Down 9 at the half

C’s finished out the half with the upper hand.

by Tom Lewis on Nov 14, 2009 8:12 PM EST reply actions   0 recs

Right. Here's for another shot at a comment.

You guys seem to be playing quite well. What’s making the difference? Why’s Boston up?

As for me, I’m just glad Boston actually showed up. We’ve been pulling no-shows of sorts, on and off the past few games. It’s actually rather frustrating.

I think, like the Hawks, you guys should try to out-rebound us. Seemed to work well for them.

Oh well, good luck in the second half, peeps. It’s just nine points now, which is rather close. This isn’t over yet.

- Dirk van Boxtel, the wandering Celtic fan.
@DaarisDirk

by Kiorrik on Nov 14, 2009 8:13 PM EST reply actions   0 recs

For one, Boston is getting far more easy buckets in the lane. Pacers are living and dying on the perimeter.

We're such a perimeter oriented team

I wish we could get easier shots in the paint.

It doesn’t help when all five Celtics are in the lane as soon as we start putting it inside. It’s very hard.

their sideline guy was about 10 ft from Perk when it happened

What they don’t know is what might have been going on the 90 minutes leading up to the tech. I imagine T’s are usually given when someone’s been talking too much all game

ever hear the caller who phoned the jim rome show and said, “We dont need to drill for oil, just wipe it off Doc’s Dome” , man, Im a fan of Doc Rivers, but thats funny … I had hoped the Pacers would of hired Avery Johnson, but thats cool

Yeah I've been hoping we go for the little general myself

A) because I like his coaching
B) because I like his accent

"If you don't [draft me], I promise you I'll come back and kick your ass for the next 15 years."

correction

I didn’t mean I like it as a cool accent or anything, moreso I find it amusing

"If you don't [draft me], I promise you I'll come back and kick your ass for the next 15 years."

Wow!

NO ONE in the lane on that dunk!

Pacers up 102-95!

Are players allowed to stand at certain points?

I thought the new rule said they couldn’t stand at all, but a few times I’ve seen players standing on both benches. Either I missed part of that rule or players just don’t mind breaking it.

by smj887 on Nov 14, 2009 9:15 PM EST reply actions   0 recs

That is the new rule

I’m not sure how enforced it is though.

Bruno's Blog Too Slow

I’ve got no video for this one. Just the gamecast and these comments. Looks fantastic! Or at least it seems fantastic.

Roy may not have the boards tonight

But has four assists. Pretty good for a big man.

No need to foul, Watson

Stopping the clock is the worst thing we can do right now.

Backpack Attack

That fund is getting pretty full. And to think I was worried about it a few games ago.

Up 11 with 1:13 to play

I’m still trying to figure out how the Paces will win?

by Tom Lewis on Nov 14, 2009 9:28 PM EST reply actions   0 recs

I kind of like Quinn's analysis

That you can run the legs out form the Celtics. We were definitely outhustling them here later in the game.

Well, barring an catastrophic collapse

I think this game has shown this team is definitely better than the 0-3 start. Even if Boston is on the second night of a back to back.

Great win guys!

It’s a streak!!! Who’s next? New Jersey?

by Gwen on Nov 14, 2009 9:34 PM EST reply actions   0 recs

Now

We have to avoid the letdown against New Jersey.

Haha

Austin having trouble holding his smile back. Once a Pacer, always a Pacer.

by goodlucksaturday on Nov 14, 2009 9:35 PM EST reply actions   0 recs

Wow - Celtics definitely beat us on the boards

but Pacers had 31 assists! I like to see.
And Pacers shot 50% from 3 compared to 25% from the Celtics.
