Dejuan Blair's Debut

I really hope the Tyler Hansboro pick work out well because the numbers put up by BLAIR last night are SCARY considering everyone in the league passed on this guy. Including the Pacers, we brought him in for a workout.

Star-divide

Blair's 1st night of work: 22 Minutes 16 Points 19 Rebounds ..... I wonder when and what we will get out of Ty on his Debut? What do you think? Did Larry make a big mistake?

Dayum!

Preseason, but still!

This is exactly what I was afraid of. Bird better hope that Blair knocks this off.

And oh by the way I imagine Ty’s numbers will be considerably less during his debut.

If Blair doesn’t knock this off, the Clippers are gonna be pissed they chose Griffin!

Painful indeed

But Hansbrough was a reliable choice who will always give a consistent effort and…wait. Hans ain’t playing and Blair OBVIOUSLY is. Bitter irony.

Every team could be kicking themselves.

That is a HUGE piece of irony

And I was a huge fan of Blair for the Pacers at draft time. However, this is one game, in preseason, etc. And the injury concerns for Blair are not immediate, rather, they’re more long-term (I think). They’re worried about just having him a couple years, not necessarily that he would get hurt right away.

Also, for what it’s worth, there were not a lot of rebounding guys in that game. No Yao, no Duncan, no Theo Ratliff or McDyess, no Battier or Joey Dorsey. I still think Blair has the chance to be a stud and huge rebounding numbers might be normal for him, but this was an easier game for him to do it.

"If you don't [draft me], I promise you I'll come back and kick your ass for the next 15 years."

Good Debut

but a little early to judge based off a single pre-season game. However if he is able to consistently do anything close to this in the seasons to come..maaaaannn; Bird better hope Tyler can produce at a similar level to justify passing on Dejuan. OOhhh Well Go TYLER…lol.

Opportunity is missed by most people because it comes dressed in overalls and looks like work.

Too Early To Judge

…plus, I know a lot of people will always blame Bird for not drafting Blair if he turns out to be a stud, and although maybe some of it could be deserved, it’s not like Blair went to the 14th, 15th or even 16th picks. I mean, 15 other GM’s passed over the guy after Bird did. Also, wasn’t the pick just between Hansbrough and Gerald Henderson?

by spstevenson on Oct 7, 2009 10:19 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Exactly.

I don’t know why one should criticise Bird in particular if Blair turns out to have a great career. There must have been something wrong with Blair, possibly a red flag from team doctors or something else, that EVERYBODY in the first round and even a few teams in the second round, when you actually don’t have a guaranteed contract (!), passed on him. Blaming Bird for not taking a player at 13th who was then taken 37th (!) does not make much sense.

The point is not that 15 other GM’s passed on this guy. That doesn’t mean anything to me. Our GM passed on him so that he could reach on a player that many other GM’s didn’t have coming off the board till later in the first round. It also doesn’t help that we took a PF ahead of Blair, if we had taken a PG you could argue that we were drafting a specific position. If Bird wanted a PF it is his job to draft us the best possible player at that position. We’ll see if that is what he’s done.

Also the injury argument goes out the window against Blair when you factor in that the player we actually drafted has already proven to be more injury prone, in college and in the pros, than Blair.

Give it some time

Most players at some point miss games, hopefully this will be the only setback Hansbrough has this year. Blair might turn out to be the better player after all is said in done, but I think Hansbrough will give us value at 13. Its the safe pick and totally not sexy, but I’m on board.

It’s crazy because everyone was talking about how this guy is undersized and reminds most people of charles barkley. i mean he’s short for his position and so was barkley, i actually see a lot of similarities to both of them. the scary thing out of all of this is, he only played a little over 20 minutes! 19 rebounds in 20 minutes? I mean i don’t know if he got those numbers because it was the preseason, but if you ask me, wherever you do it, that’s impressive. especially if it is in a short amount of time. I think over time he could be a better pick than tyler hansbrough, it’s hard to say but if he continues to play like that, then obviously we made a mistake. Remember what blair did to hasheem thabeet? Maybe that was a sign that people should of noticed. of course it was just one game, but maybe it wasn’t a fluke….

Hans vs. Blair

No point in getting upset. The Pacers have T.H. and fans have to hope for the best. They have gambled plenty with the likes of Shawn Williams, etc. This guy’s not a risk at all. He will be a 8 pt, 8 board/game guy who is a solid FT shooter and a hard worker. Could they have traded down and still got him if he was the one they had their mind set on? Absolutely.

I agree with the sentiment that there were some serious red flags that every other GM saw as well (i.e. bad knees) on Blair. I wouldn’t have taken him in the Pacers’ slot either.

Blair Once again

putting up numbers. 17 pts, 10 rebs in 15 minutes. Glad our GM was on of the idiots who seen right through this guy. I know I wouldn’t have wanted him on our team, not when that Ironman Tyler Hansbrough was still available.

Hindsight is always 20/20

Hansboro reliable? (come on Tom) he has to play a game to start a streak, to then establish reliabillity.
I’ve read that these shin issues have bee haunting Tyler for longer than has been reported ….
Very simmilar to Blair just a different body part.
1 guy shoots up the draft board 1 guy falls to the bottom.
The irony – The Irony – I don’t see this comparision ever working out well for the Pacers.

I was trying to emphasize the irony that Hans ain’t the reliable pick we heard about on draft night.

We do realize we are talking about Preseason.

By that Logic, Hibbert is an All-Star.

The concerns about Blair are real. Multiple injuries including major Knee Surgery(s). Rather short for what I’m assuming is a SF/PF type. He does a nice wingspan, but at 6-6 or 6-7 he is a tweener on where he can fit in long term.

Indiana as well as… EVERY OTHER TEAM IN THE LEAGUE passed on this guy. Shocked he dropped that far, would have thought he would have been picked up Late 1st.

If he can maintain this play into the season and for the long term their will be some GMs questioning themselves, but let’s not go crazy over a few preseason games where we don’t even know what we have just yet.

Tyler has the size, resume, potential, and firey drive to be a solid player. We’ll see soon. Tyler’s “shin problems” didn’t keep him from destroying the NCAA and UNC record books and carving out one of the most impressive College Careers in history. Shin problems compared to 2 major knee Reconstructive Surgeries aren’t even in the same arena.

This resume at the 13th Pick is NOT a stretch:
