Preseason Open Thread #3: Indiana Pacers vs. Denver Nuggets

The Indiana Pacers complete their Asian excursion with a midnight run against the Denver Nuggets in Beijing, China.

Midnight Indy time that is. Adjust for your time zone accordingly.

The game will be televised live on Fox Sports Indiana and NBA TV (free preview) with Chris Denari on the mic. Mark Boyle will have the radio call on the Pacers radio network flagshipped by 1070 The Fan. Also, check out Denver Stiffs for the Denver perspective.

If you are up for some late night hoops, please add your thoughts and observations in the comments.

Go Pacers! and let me say as a Direct Tv Subscriber I am more than happy they decided to air tonights game, a fortune I was not lucky enough to receive the other night

I was concerned that you weren’t going to figure this out before the season started…give Directv credit for getting this thing taken care of despite nobody there knowing what you were talking about

Starting Lineup

Granger, Rush, Ford, Hibbert and Murph starting for your blue and gold tonight (today?)

The Pacers are feeding the ball in the post to Hibbert on each play and he’s delivering…the improvement on his post moves during this offseason has been astronomical

Pacers allow 17 points in first 5 minutes…not a great start for the D

by spstevenson on Oct 11, 2009 12:13 AM EDT reply actions

Granger

on the bench with 2 fouls early in the first

by spstevenson on Oct 11, 2009 12:14 AM EDT reply actions

Sloppy

Not a good start at all except for the low-post moves of Hibby early on. Feels more like an all-star game minus the all-stars.

and btw how great are these guest commentators, and considering half our team is usually on the injured list we should never run out of potential guests!

Interview

In an interview with O’Brien before the game, the coach mentioned the team had the most deflections in the first game in Taipai that he’s ever seen in his years coaching

by spstevenson on Oct 11, 2009 12:19 AM EDT reply actions

Denari: “And there’s Solomon with the up-and-under with a very nice move, David?”
Morway: “Yes, very nice move.”

Roy Hibbert looks happy to be here today. Everybody else? Not so much…

Bummer

I thought the game started at 12:30. Oh well, only missed most of the first quarter.

Birdman

Chris Anderson gets a rousing applause from the sellout crowd in China. Is there any question that he’s in the top-10 in popularity of NBA players overseas? It’s like the equivalent of a mediocre rock band in America becoming superstar rockers in Japan (i.e. Jessie and the Rippers)

by spstevenson on Oct 11, 2009 12:23 AM EDT reply actions

Nice hook for Roy

Eight points already? I hope this translates well…

by Nathan S. on Oct 11, 2009 12:24 AM EDT reply actions

It's great

being able to go down to Hibbert down in the post at the start of the game. Brings back great memories of the Dutchman

by spstevenson on Oct 11, 2009 12:25 AM EDT up reply actions

I was thinking about that the other day

About how happy I’d be if Roy took the path of Smits. Maybe last a bit longer, and not take so long to become what he did…but the basics of Smits’ legacy. Why isn’t his number retired by the way?

by Nathan S. on Oct 11, 2009 12:26 AM EDT up reply actions

apparantly the pacers dont need a night where they can fill seats to honor what he did did for indiana. the sad part is I believe te man still lives in Indiana but it seems like the pacers never want anything to do with him

If Youre not First, Youre Last

by drsuessrunner07 on Oct 11, 2009 12:28 AM EDT up reply actions

If a team like the Heat can retire players from other teams and sports, then you’d think the Pacers could add Smits. I mean, the shot over Tree Rollins should be enough. Maybe he really pissed everyone off when he retired after 2000.

god i hope hibbert can stay out of foul trouble this year

19-3 run

Pacers making up for the lackluster start to the game

by spstevenson on Oct 11, 2009 12:45 AM EDT reply actions

I know it's preseason

But I like how we can still score a lot of points, score in bunches, and even hold opponents (though Denver has shot a lot of really poor shots). I’m really hoping this kind of stuff can translate well.

by Nathan S. on Oct 11, 2009 12:48 AM EDT up reply actions

Technical fouls so far on O’Brien and Karl…really looking forward to see how this replacement ref thing plays out during the season

by spstevenson on Oct 11, 2009 12:49 AM EDT reply actions

This building looks a bit familiar

Is this where USA Basketball played last year?

by Nathan S. on Oct 11, 2009 12:49 AM EDT reply actions

I think so

but don’t quote me on that. I think it said it was since Melo was familiar with the arena

by spstevenson on Oct 11, 2009 12:51 AM EDT up reply actions

I'm not digging our PG passing

And that was a three? He looked really far inside.

What’s the technical for? Ejected? The hell?

by Nathan S. on Oct 11, 2009 12:57 AM EDT reply actions

Granger

Not sure what that was about. Do you really want to throw out one of the star players during a preseason game that is showcasing your league overseas? Replacement refs didn’t get the memo on that one.

by spstevenson on Oct 11, 2009 12:59 AM EDT reply actions

T.J. talking to the ref

I can’t read lips, but I think he’s probably saying, “What the hell are you doing ejecting one of the biggest names in this exhibition game?”

by Nathan S. on Oct 11, 2009 12:59 AM EDT reply actions

Did I miss something?

Was it trash talk or something? Unfortunately, I can’t rewind to see what Danny actually did to warrant getting ejected…

by Nathan S. on Oct 11, 2009 1:02 AM EDT reply actions

He was arguing the foul and they immediately gave him that first tech, but they cut away on the camera so it’s unclear what he said or did to warrant the second tech and the ejection. Must have said something.

by spstevenson on Oct 11, 2009 1:03 AM EDT up reply actions

This could be really bad if this sort of thing isn't taken care of

I normally wouldn’t care, but if our star player is going to get ejected because of it…I’m going to start getting worried.

And man, these point guard circus passes from Watson, Price, T.J. make me more uncomfortable than when Jack was pulling up every chance he got…

by Nathan S. on Oct 11, 2009 1:05 AM EDT up reply actions

PG's

Yeah, they’re really getting bad in this game about trying to penetrate the lane and then just whimsically throwing the ball back out on the perimeter. Not a fan.

by spstevenson on Oct 11, 2009 1:07 AM EDT up reply actions

Hair

With that hair, Josh McRoberts looks like Lou Ferrigno as Hulk.

First from Dahntay, now from Rush.

Passing

the Pacers passing is getting worse by the minute…Hibbert just needs to take the ball up the court in the 2nd half and just do everything himself

Geezus

Did Denari say there were about 500 diehard Pacers fans in China? Considering their population size, I feel like that seems low. I always thought there was a ridiculous Pacers following in China.

by spstevenson on Oct 11, 2009 1:21 AM EDT reply actions

I'm sure there are more than 500

But there may be 500 signed up on pacerschina.com.

Man...

I can’t stay up late like I used to. I think I’ll have to trust the team to either pull it out or at least establish better ball control in the second half.

by Nathan S. on Oct 11, 2009 1:29 AM EDT reply actions

Nene with 7 quick points in the 3rd quarter. and carmelo just hit a riculous jumper and got fouled, he has 31 and will proally end up with as many points as he wants to have
