UPDATE: Bruno's Inside the Game LIVE is up.

The Indiana Pacers begin their trek home with a stop-over in Salt Lake City on Monday night to take on the Utah Jazz. After dropping two tight games to the LA Lakers and Golden State Warriors, the Pacers will attempt to salvage something positive, namely a W, to end the roadie with a good feeling.

Defense, or lack thereof, continues to dominate any analysis of how the Pacers are playing and what needs to improve. We're past considering how to shut down an opponent and forced to wonder how the Pacers will minimize the damge. So the question becomes: Who is going to go off for the Jazz?

The Pacers should match up pretty well with the Jazz who are without Carlos Boozer due to injury. Paul Millsap has been playing like a beast in Boozer's absence and you know Deron Williams will be a problem, but I'm more worried about the Ronnies (Price and Brewer), Kyle Korver and C.J. Miles. These guys are the type of role players that have hurt the Pacers all year. One time, it would be nice to see one of these guys get a hot hand only to have a defender in blue and gold step up and say, "No more, someone else will beat us tonight." Just a thought.

Playing the second game of a back-to-back against a rested team, coupled with the last game of a long road trip, gives the Jazz a big mental and physical advantage. For this Pacers team, maybe that's a good thing.

Here are the Pacers.com matchups. I'm assuming Marquis Daniels is a game-time decision and T.J. Ford won't be available, again.

Gameday Reading

  • Bruno's Inside the Game LIVE final and Postgame Report. Bruno forecast the future with his comment during the fourth quarter: "The weebles are wobbling." Unfortunately, they fell over in the end.
  • Mike Wells reports on the Pacers' failure to finish at Golden State last night.
  • Wells further opines, in his Pacers Insider post, on the Pacers' defense holding them back and keeping them in draft lottery contention.
  • Pacers Notebook has more on Mike Dunleavy's easy transition back into the lineup. Dun is close to earning more minutes from the training staff depending on how he holds up tonight in the back-to-back situation.
  • Ron Kroichick finds the Warriors happy to end their five-game losing streak.
  • Ross Siler examines Utah's recent success as the Jazz have won four of their past five games. We also learn that C.J. Miles is doubtful as he recovers from a sprained ankle and Deron Williams missed practice yeaterday due to illness.

Not that it means anything

but besides Indy and Portland, i watch Utah the most. Half because they are exciting to watch, the other half cause i have Deron, Millsap, Kirilenko, and CJ Miles on my fantasy team haha. I will say one thing, if we dont come out with a ton of energy (off a road back to back, eh) they can smoke us off the opening tip. When healthy I still think they are one of the better teams in the league, and this is gonna be a real real tough game. We need big Roy and Jeff and Troy to be extremely active on Millsap and Kirilenko on the boards. SHould be interesting

M. Daniels

It’d be nice to hear something a little concrete about him. Having Dunleavy back probably pushes him back to the bench, but he should continue to be quite productive as he’ll now be one of the leaders on the 2nd team. Should allow Granger to get a little more rest as well – don’t want to burn out the young stud.

I'm no commie, but the Reds shall be the best again!

I agree

On his radio show last Thursday, JOB sounded like Quisy would be ready sooner than T.J. Then TJ plays last night. Oh, well. Life and times of the 2008-09 Pacers.

Thanks for the update

Bummer, I’d rather take on the Jazz at full strength and…Ha ha, who am I kidding? We’ll take every little break we can get. Oops, I’m sure I just jinxed any advantage the Pacers would get from ‘Sap sittin’.

by Tom Lewis on Jan 12, 2009 8:38 PM EST up reply actions

It wouldn't really have been full strength...

depending on who you ask, I guess.

I guess we’ll be able to see a Hibbert v. Koufos match-up tonight.

by UtesFan89 on Jan 12, 2009 8:50 PM EST up reply actions

Roy and 1 to open the game

when he heard the whistle, Roy took a glance appearing to expect the foul being called on him.

by Tom Lewis on Jan 12, 2009 9:13 PM EST reply actions

Oops

Roy with the pass to Ronnie Brewer for a free flush at the other end. Roy picked up third foul, leaves with seven points.

Jazz up 19-16

by Tom Lewis on Jan 12, 2009 9:20 PM EST reply actions

Whoa

The race to 120 is on again. Jazz up 26-21 with 4:49 left.

Mehmet Okur and Ronnie Brewer have combined for 20 points.

by Tom Lewis on Jan 12, 2009 9:22 PM EST reply actions

Foster seems out of it

Missed bunny, horrible turnover right under Jazz hoop and then standing in the lane to draw a defensive T. Strange.

by Tom Lewis on Jan 12, 2009 9:28 PM EST reply actions

Uh oh

Here comes Korver. Guys like Korver make the Pacers quiver.

No TJ tonight? Diener first PG off the bench.

by Tom Lewis on Jan 12, 2009 9:31 PM EST reply actions

Cool

Jazz rookie center Koufas picks up a foul a la Hibbert. Rooks gotta earn it.

by Tom Lewis on Jan 12, 2009 9:32 PM EST reply actions

End 1Q: Jazz up 36-32

Defense picking up where it left off last night, meaning it’s not picking up anyone on the Jazz.

by Tom Lewis on Jan 12, 2009 9:34 PM EST reply actions

Is this the pace you guys normally play at?

Because I don’t think the Jazz have 36 mid way through the 2nd most of the time…

by UtesFan89 on Jan 12, 2009 9:34 PM EST reply actions

Yes

We don’t like defense. It’s the devil.

by Peter_sixtyftsixin on Jan 12, 2009 9:36 PM EST up reply actions

Okay, fine be me. :)

I love it when the Jazz get out and run. It seems so effective… at least against the Warriors (though they have a similar feeling about defense).

Sloan

Is he just a dead guy who has been propped up? Or a marionette of some sort? Maybe even a zombie.

by Peter_sixtyftsixin on Jan 12, 2009 9:42 PM EST up reply actions

The shorter we play defense

the more shots we get to hoist, that seems to be the team strategy.

by TheHawk5 on Jan 12, 2009 9:41 PM EST up reply actions

Rasho with the smothered chicken

and then the foul on Stevie.

Jazz up 49-48 little over six minutes to go in half.

by Tom Lewis on Jan 12, 2009 9:49 PM EST reply actions

The Jazz

Seriously half the team and the coach look sort of like zombies. Explanations anyone?

by Peter_sixtyftsixin on Jan 12, 2009 9:51 PM EST reply actions

Pacers looking worn out

No depth limiting scoring options right now.

by Tom Lewis on Jan 12, 2009 10:00 PM EST reply actions

Sheesh

Wide open 18-footer for Okur. I feell cheated that he didn’t use the glass.

by Tom Lewis on Jan 12, 2009 10:04 PM EST reply actions

Wow

We’re playing like excrement.

by Peter_sixtyftsixin on Jan 12, 2009 10:35 PM EST reply actions

Okur has 37

Jazz up 18. 92-74 with 5:50 left in 3Q.

This is brutal

I wonder how many opposing players have either A) gotten their season high against the Pacers or B) gotten their career high against the Pacers.

by Gwen on Jan 12, 2009 10:41 PM EST reply actions

Interesting Thought

If I wasn’t super not into it right now, I’d look into it. Check back tomorrow.

by Peter_sixtyftsixin on Jan 12, 2009 10:42 PM EST up reply actions

I think

that the long road trip, back to back games and the fact that the Pacers are what? 5-8 in games decided by 3 pts or less are getting to the Pacers…not that this was an original analysis….

by Gwen on Jan 12, 2009 10:45 PM EST reply actions

I can't wait to get back to playing Eastern Conference teams

I think we’re going to turn it around against the East, and that’s how we’ll make the playoffs.

by Peter_sixtyftsixin on Jan 12, 2009 10:46 PM EST up reply actions

Last game of a roadie always a problem

not to mention after a back-to-back. Gamblers love these games.

by Tom Lewis on Jan 12, 2009 10:46 PM EST up reply actions

Egads - Okur has 41!

And you can add his name to that list of players that have had their career high against us.

by Gwen on Jan 12, 2009 10:46 PM EST reply actions

Remember the first LA game

We came from 18 down in the fourth. We might do it.

by Peter_sixtyftsixin on Jan 12, 2009 10:48 PM EST reply actions

I agree with the East

Aside from Boston, Cleveland and Orland…there aren’t a lot of teams that are really that good…still, the Pacers need to play some sort of defense and learn how to close out games.

by Gwen on Jan 12, 2009 10:49 PM EST reply actions

Ugh

Stevie and Graham turn it over with .4 left and naturally Korver gets an open look and knocks down the three. Unreal.

End 3Q Jazz up 99-87

by Tom Lewis on Jan 12, 2009 10:52 PM EST reply actions

I think opposing players

use up their basketball god luck against us – then crap against everyone else.

by Gwen on Jan 12, 2009 10:52 PM EST reply actions

Whew

Korver’s shots was late and Dun opens with a three.

 Back in business.

by Tom Lewis on Jan 12, 2009 10:54 PM EST reply actions

I think he’s in the vally tonight. Sure making it look easy.

by Tom Lewis on Jan 12, 2009 10:57 PM EST up reply actions

25 pts right now a valley?

I suppose so when you realize what’s he’s done lately

by Gwen on Jan 12, 2009 10:58 PM EST up reply actions

Diener with the stiff arm

Pacers confused on what sport they’re playing

by Peter_sixtyftsixin on Jan 12, 2009 10:57 PM EST reply actions

we cant

let okur go off for 50…that would be downright embrassing…

and on the league pass broadcast, they missed the first 20 seconds of the 4th, so instead of me assuming 99-87, it was 96-90 after the take away of korers 3, and dunleavys made 3….now thats a nice commercial break

by captain flitzy on Jan 12, 2009 10:58 PM EST reply actions

Yeah

Like 41 is not embarassing as it is.

by Tom Lewis on Jan 12, 2009 10:59 PM EST up reply actions

What does everyone say?

Goes down to the last second again?

by Gwen on Jan 12, 2009 11:01 PM EST reply actions

I wish I could be confident

That they could pull it out, but the way things have gone with these pacers, I’ll just keep hanging onto my seat and hope.

by bball_fan on Jan 12, 2009 11:04 PM EST up reply actions

Foster

Grab the ball, take your time with the shot or give back out. Please.

by Tom Lewis on Jan 12, 2009 11:04 PM EST reply actions

Two predictions

Prediction A: It goes down to the wire again

Prediction B: We lose steam and lose by 10+

by Peter_sixtyftsixin on Jan 12, 2009 11:05 PM EST reply actions

I pick A

Because it’s indiana

by Gwen on Jan 12, 2009 11:06 PM EST up reply actions

Question

Sort of off topic, but does anyone know the actual reason why the ownership of the Jazz kept the nickname as it is when the team moved from New Orleans?

by Peter_sixtyftsixin on Jan 12, 2009 11:07 PM EST reply actions

Same reason as

The rams kept being called the rams even though they’ve moved a billion tims shrug

by Gwen on Jan 12, 2009 11:08 PM EST up reply actions

Yeah,

but Rams is a non area specific name. Jazz isn’t.

by Peter_sixtyftsixin on Jan 12, 2009 11:10 PM EST up reply actions

I'm not sure on history

But if the moved happened with the same owners, I can see why they didn’t bother changing their name. The move didn’t make them a new franchise, just a new location…sort of like the Lakers, I suppose.

by Gwen on Jan 12, 2009 11:13 PM EST up reply actions

I'm late

But they weren’t confident that the Jazz were going to last in Utah. So they figured it wouldn’t be worth changing if they were going to move again. By the time they were stable in Utah, the name had stuck.

by Basketball John on Jan 13, 2009 12:26 AM EST up reply actions

Not sure

but I think the Pacers just stole the ball by plaing (gasp) a little defense.

by Tom Lewis on Jan 12, 2009 11:13 PM EST reply actions

NO!

Defense is the devil! We shall have none of that.

by Peter_sixtyftsixin on Jan 12, 2009 11:14 PM EST up reply actions

which resulted in a foul

I don’t get it. Williams didn’t have possession and it was an equal scramble, well, Foster tends to push…

by Gwen on Jan 12, 2009 11:15 PM EST up reply actions

This week

I’m pumped. I’m wearing a Detroit Sucks shirt on Wednesday, and Informing Jermaine he sucks on Friday. Go team!

Hi I'm Mike Dunleavy

Hi Mike, I’m Jarret Jack. These are my hands.

by Gwen on Jan 12, 2009 11:26 PM EST reply actions

Great game guys.

Sorry for another tough loss. It’s gotta be frustrating, the way you guys saw this roadtrip end.

by UtesFan89 on Jan 12, 2009 11:26 PM EST reply actions

It is

It’s always Sunny in Philadelphia helps me forget the pain.

by Peter_sixtyftsixin on Jan 12, 2009 11:27 PM EST up reply actions

If anyone is going to the game Wednesday

I’ll be the short dude in a Granger jersey yelling Detroit Sucks the entire game. Say hi if you hear me.

by Peter_sixtyftsixin on Jan 12, 2009 11:27 PM EST reply actions

Enjoy the game

I’m heading out to Seattle for few days so I’m going to miss the next two home games.
