Philly Ties Up Cap With Iguodala Signing
Kelly Dwyer expounded nicely on something I was thinking about in the shower this morning. Now before we go any further, I didn't share my thought with KD nor was he sharing the shower with me. We just both happen to ponder the NBA for a disproportionate amount of our waking hours. Hey, at least it's fun.
Back to the topic at hand. KD raised a worry over the Sixers inking Andre Iguodala to a big extension, thus adding a coat of plaster to their salary cap situation for the next few years.
Yes there are plenty of kudos due the Sixers for becoming talented, stable and extremely relevant in the Eastern Conference. But predicting the future is tough and I've seen the Pacers crap out after going all in with their cap space.
KD says: But it's that smack of "what if?"
Exactly. What if your cap eaters struggle to stay healthy? Yes, they'll look extremely fresh with a variety of suits and accessories, but that won't help gather any Ws. What if the talent plateus or regresses? What if young talent emerges and rightfully demands a big chunk of the cap? What if the team needs to tweak the roster but there's no way to tweak without moving big contracts? Moving big contracts always becomes an overhaul.
So, good luck to the Sixers. Personally, I would've let Iggy go and use that money differently so the team could move forward with some flexibility. But, I love their young talent and the direction the team is headed. If offered, I'd swap full rosters straight up for the Pacers without hesitation. Still, the team will need some luck to avoid the worst case scenario I'm familiar with and instead make the kind of successful run they expect with the current team locked in place.
