Shaun Livingston: Low Risk, High Reward
With all the current news surrounding the L.A. Clippers focusing on the recent free agent signing of Baron Davis and the controversial loss of All-Star power forward Elton Brand (signed with the 76ers), nobody seems to have said a word about the Clippers renouncing the rights to the once coveted and currently recuperating guard Shaun Livingston.
Livingston, taken by Los Angeles as the fourth overall pick in the 2004 NBA draft, hasn't played since injuring his left knee in a game on Feb. 26, 2007. The Clippers declined to give him a $5.8 million qualifying offer this summer. In becoming an unrestricted free agent, the 6'7", 22 year old point guard is currently looking for work and hoping a team gives him a chance. With the jury still out on his knee, whoever takes a chance on Livingston is going to sign the Peoria, Illinois product at a discount. With open cap space and the ceiling of potential still so high for Shaun Livingston in my mind, the Pacers should take the risk and bring him to Indiana especially if Shaun is willing to sign to a league minimum contract.
In acquiring T.J. Ford and Jarrett Jack this off-season, as well as having Travis Diener as their back-up, there would be no pressure for Livingston to play now or rush his rehabilitation. In signing veteran point guard Baron Davis as well as the Clippers impatience with Livingston's rehab, collectively lead the Clippers to letting him walk away, a choice they might later regret.
The Pacers should bring Livingston in by offering him a 2 year contract with a 3rd and 4th year option similar to what a rookie mid-late 1st round draft pick receives. If Livingston doesn't pan out, don't pick up the option in the 3rd year, which would perfectly work out to increase the Pacers cap space right as superstars Chris Bosh and Dwayne Wade hit the open market (as well as the likely untouchable LeBron James). But, if Livingston proves the Clippers wrong, gets healthy, and becomes half the player he was projected as a rookie, the Pacers would only add to the their already deep backcourt, allowing Indiana to luxury of trading one of their floor generals to strengthen their front line.
Coming into the draft and before his near career ending injury, USA Today said this of Shaun Livingston:
COMPARATIVE UPSIDE: Magic Johnson COMPARATIVE DOWNSIDE: Jalen Rose
ROLE PROJECTION: Starter, future Hall of Famer
POSITIVES: Any team that passes up Livingston for a more polished pearl will not be able to live it down seven years from now. By then, at only 25, Livingston will be able to dominate a NBA game without scoring a single point and eventually will go down as one of the greatest playmakers in NBA history. Not only does he have incredible vision and instincts, but his towering 6-7 frame allows him to get his shot off with very little spacing from his defender, while his outstanding ballhandling protects the rock from grabby opponents. He does not have to operate from the far perimeter, as most guards do, offering him unique passing angles from mid-range. Livingston's height, long arms and ability to palm a basketball let him quickly dish the ball over or around his defender with the flick of one hand.
SHORTCOMINGS: Only one thing can block Livingston from stardom, and that is not improving his long-range shooting. If opponents do not respect Livingston's outside shot, they can crowd him defensively on the far perimeter, preventing him from penetrating to the mid-range area of the floor, which is where he does most of his damage.
WHAT THEY'RE SAYING: "He's outstanding, that's easy. I watched him a lot this year. He has a chance, and (I) hate to compare players because I usually don't do this, but I think he's special like J-Kidd — he can see (the whole floor). — Memphis Grizzlies scout Rodney Heard
I would take Jalen Rose in a heart beat, but hell if we got Magic Johnson, Larry Bird will be getting the Sporting News NBA Executive of the Year award without a doubt.

I’m a big Livingston fan. His injury was absolutely gruesome, but he should be able to recover. Personally, I think Diener shouldn’t make this roster. He’s not one of the best 15 players who can make this roster. I would take Livingston and even Calloway over him. Here is what I think the 15 man roster SHOULD look like on November 1st:
PG: Ford/Jack/Calloway
SG: Granger/Rush/Graham
SF: Dunleavy/Daniels/Williams
PF: Murphy/Baston/McRoberts
C: Foster/Hibbert/Nesterovic

It's funny
that the highest paid player on this team is at PF. I think we should look for more help there instead of going for Livingston. But he would be a nice addition due to his “upside”.

This is the kind of pickup
that can turn the fortunes of a team. You literally have nothing to lose, spend a little bit of money, lock him up for a few years and make him comfortable. HES ONLY 22!!!!

Exactly:
HE fits the age our team is looking for in building a championship contender down the line, actually, he is even younger than Brandon Rush and Roy Hibbert. With the questions still out about T.J. Ford’s neck, and knowing Jarrett Jack is going to be nothing more than an amazing back-up, I say we give Livingston the Mid Level Exception and see what happens. It could, as you said, turn around the fortunes of our franchise!

who cares?
diener is 1 million percent replacebale. I dont know what people see in him, he didnt impress me at all last year. Dieners potential has been realized, and to me hes a subpar backkup. Livingston really hasnt scratched the surface yet. Is there serious talk in INDY about this happening or am i getting excited for nothing?

RealGM said it is a possibility....
I just hope they take a chance on the guy, he is a high character individual the only worry is the knee but who cares. In my mind it will certainly get fans excited and please dont worry about Diener, do you see him doing anything in a NBA Finals that would put his team over the top in winning a championship, or even see him doing anything that would make a team look back and say, man thank goodness we had Travis on the bench, without him we would be screwed!
Livingston on the other hand, a 6-7 POINT GUARD! That is a once in ten years prospect, thats unheard of, he would be shut down on defense, and if he can come back healthy, he would be an amazing player, likely start over Ford and Jack if he got to 100% again! Please Bird, please sign this kid! I know I would be extremely pumped!!!

I know he's replaceable---
I’m not a huge fan of him as well. But will we end up having to buy out 2 point guards this offseason?

This was an update on Livingston on January 10th, 2008 (sounds like he was as far along as Tinsley was)
Buzzer Beater: Good news in Clipper land. Looks like Shaun Livingston could be returning to the other L.A. team’s lineup at some point this year.
The medical team feels he’s going to make a full recovery,” team president Andy Roeser said at halftime of Wednesday night’s game against the Orlando Magic. “There’s a pretty good chance he’ll be on the court before the end of the season.
"The most significant thing is whether he makes a full recovery. It's significant that we think he can make a full recovery."

The SUNS are looking at picking up Livingston!!!
If the Phoenix Suns, a team with a win now mentality, and have a PG who has won 2 MVP awards in the last 4 years, it makes no sense why the Indiana Pacers wouldnt be trying their luck at Livingston!!!
Peoria Illinois isnt much farther from Indianapolis as it is from Chicago! You would think Livingston would love the chance to go to a city near where he grew up… but not too close (Peoria is in the dead middle of Illinois)!! Bring Shaun Livingston to the Pacers, pleaseeee!!!
