Question From a Wizards Fan

Greetings to everybody here.  Right now we're having a contest over at Bullets Forever called "You Be the GM".  I'm sure you can figure out what that entails (or you can click the link and read about it).  Anyway, the reason I'm posting here is to see if there would be any interest/support in the Pacers community of a trade involving our two teams.  Particularly, I was thinking something along the lines of a sign-and-trade of Gilbert Arenas packaged with some other player(s) and draft picks to acquire Jermaine O'Neal.

If I were the GM of the Wizards, I would be basing this trade scenario on the assumption that I'd resign Antawn Jamison to complement Caron Butler, so obviously those two would be off-limits in the trade discussion.  I'd listen to offers for all other Wizards players.  Also, our team is kind of light on guards, so giving up Arenas would mean that I'd have to replace him with another serviceable guard, preferably a point guard.  I could address that need with the 18th pick in the draft, but if you're interested in that pick I would probably need one of the Pacers guards to be included in the trade.  What are your thoughts?  Any interest here for the services of Gilbert Arenas?  If this were to go down, Gilbert would be arriving here with a 5-6 year salary starting at around $16.4 million.  Let me know what you guys think.

AGENT ZERO, YES PLEASE, but.....

Preposterous Idea BUT I like it…

Wizards Trade:

1. Gilbert Arenas – $15 million
2. Etan Thomas – $6.4 million – 3 years, Pacers would eat up the Wizards worst contract
3. 18th overall pick

Pacers Trade:

1. Jermaine O’Neal – $20 million
2. 11th overall pick

Possible Variances:
No Picks Involved and the trade is…

Wizards Trade:
1. Gilbert Arenas
2. Etan Thomas
3. DeShawn Stevenson (Wizards have Nick Young, more potential, younger, and less $)
4. Darius Songailia

Pacers Trade:
1. Jermaine O’Neal
2. Jamaal Tinsley
(Larry Bird throws in a future first round pick, kisses the Wizards feet, and promises if his 17 year old son Connor Bird becomes a NBA player the Wizards have the draft rights to him before anyone else has a chance, therefor Connor will not enter the draft, he simply will sign with the Wizards as a free agent when he is 19 following the refusal of playing for any team but the Wizards)

The money works out on both of these deals but it would be complete insanity if either trade happened, if there was a swap of picks on the second trade it potentially could happen… but summer block busters are rare…. actually blockbusters are rare altogether… this trade would be nuts but if the Wizards offered either of them Bird would pull the trigger in a second, guaranteed!

I Would Definitely Do the Trade

I’m glad to see some interest in this idea from at least one Pacers fan. I would be willing to do either trade, and I especially like your first scenario. I would be willing to trade Gilbert and Etan for Jermaine O’Neal straight up, the 11th draft pick for our 18th would be a bonus for me. Here is my thinking:

Gilbert is coming off of two knee surgeries. When healthy, he’s an explosive scorer and a late-game closer, but lacks in defense. The big problem is, he hasn’t been healthy in over a year. He is such a fierce competitor that he twice this season came back from his injury too early, causing him to reaggravate his knee both times. Even while playing injured, Gilbert still is very effective offensively, but he lacked a lot of his explosion to the rim and his defensive lapses grew even worse than before. Still, I was optimistic enough to hope for his return to the Wizards this upcoming season, until he officially opted out of his contract this month and repeated his ultimatum of a max contract. He did say he is willing to sign for a little less than max money if that meant resigning Jamison (which I think the Wizards should do), but he would certainly want significantly more than the $12.8 million he is opting out of, so his and Antawn’s salaries would preclude (Wizards GM) Ernie Grunfeld from picking up any other decent help. Some players are never the same after blowing out their knee, and I’m hesitant to see Ernie give a guy a 6 year deal starting at around $16.4 million (probably not $15 million, see this link for more details) who hasn’t proven he can play healthy in more than a year.

The Wizards are a mediocre playoff team with a healthy version of their current roster. Their biggest weaknesses are defense (especially in the paint), size, and low-post scoring. Despite having a plethora of forwards (Jamison, Butler, Blatche, Songaila, Thomas, Pecherov, and McGuire), almost all of them are pillowy-soft on defense and the ones who aren’t (Butler, McGuire, maybe Songailia) don’t have the size to guard other teams’ big men. Haywood showed real improvement this past season, but he only has the stamina for about 30-35 MPG, and that’s if he doesn’t get in foul trouble (which happens often because he’s the only defender capable of guarding opposing big men). Cleveland, as you probably all know, is very good at taking advantage of our weaknesses in the playoffs. The game scenario goes something like this: use Ilgauskas to get Haywood in foul trouble early, then absolutely abuse the Wizards in the paint and on the boards. Without Haywood in the game, opposing defenses collapse on Jamison and basically turn the Wizards into a jump-shot only team. A healthy Arenas helps this with his penetration, but there is still only so much a 6’4” guard can do in the land of the trees.

Now, I’m not naive enough to believe that JO is the messiah for the Wizards in terms of all of these needs. But I certainly think he can help a lot, if he can stay healthy. Playing for a team that’s already playoff caliber without him may help motivate him in this regard. If he can give us 16-20 points, 7-9 rebounds, and a couple of blocks a night, I’d take it in a heartbeat. Really I would just want him to defend the paint well, especially against opposing PFs/Cs. Butler and Jamison are more than good enough to provide the scoring.

As for the scoring drop from Gilbert, Caron has shown that he is a better player when Gilbert is not on the court. I’m not exactly sure why. Caron is a good player alongside Arenas, but when Arenas went down, Caron really stepped up his game. When Arenas came back, Caron regressed, especially in the playoffs. So while I don’t buy into the theory that the Wizards are a better team without Arenas (which a lot of people were propagating over at Bullets Forever), I don’t think the dropoff without Arenas is worth $16.4 million a year. On the other hand, Arenas could provide a lot to a team looking for a primary scorer and clutch shooter. Arenas averages close to 30 points a game when healthy and often gives you a 40-50 point scoring night. His field goal percentage is deceptively low because he takes a lot of 3-pointers. His true shooting percentage when healthy was .565, on par with LeBron James, Allen Iverson, and Carmelo Anthony.

As for Etan Thomas, he’s a serviceable center when healthy, but clearly overpaid at $6.8 million. He’s got a decent array of low-post offensive moves, but he’s not a good defender. He’s also coming off of open-heart surgery and hasn’t played in over a year. All things considered, Ernie (and a lot of Wizards fans) would love to dump his contract, if he could.

So again, I think this is a good deal from my perspective.

Dicey proposition for Pacers

I would LOVE to add Gilbert Arenas to the Pacers for a variety of reasons, but mainly because he’s fun to watch on the court and maybe more fun to observe off. But, making a deal for him (and say, Etan Thomas as proposed) just doesn’t seem like the right move for the Pacers right now. For one, I don’t know that they’d want to tie up 15 plus million over five years for a guy with Gil’s GP history. The organization is on the hunt for reliable, consitent players they can count on every day and I don’t think Arenas fits that description. Unless the roster is revamped more significantly I can’t see the Pacers taking a leap of faith with Agent Zero. Sure would be fun, though, wouldn’t it?

Oh Well

You kind of burst my bubble, but I’ve decided to propose this trade in our contest anyway. At least it’s better than this one.

Also, to be fair to Arenas, when he was healthy he was consistent. He rarely scored less than 20 points in any game. He often would score 40 or more. The team has played inconsistently during this timeframe, but I blame that on the coach, not Gilbert.

I like the deal

I just think the Pacers are somewhat risk averse right now, unfortunately. Limits the options.

Still like it too...

The reason we would have to take Etan is because Gilbert is way more valuable than Jermaine, so we would have to do the Wizards a favor… that is why I said we would eat up that contract. The thing ya got to remember about Gilbert is that he is 26…. perfect age for our young core… Granger is 25… and Dunleavy is 27… If we added a low post presence with potential like say Texas A & Ms DeAndre Jordan… just imagine if that 7 footer ended up playing similar to Chris Bosh… our lineup would be lethal! Projected starting 5:

C: Troy Murphy
PF: DeAndre Jordan
SF: Danny Granger
SG: Mike Dunleavy
PG: Gilbert Arenas

Bench
PF: Ike Diogu
SF: Shawne Williams
PG: Travis Diener
PG/SG: Marquis Daniels
C: Jeff Foster

= PLAYOFF CALIBER IN MY MIND, on the contingent that Gilbert becomes an All-Star and maintains his health, and DeAndre blows up with his giant ceiling of potential… we would put a beating on the Wizards even if Jermaine was healthy…. and I guarantee that, or at least hope…

i would love to add gilbert to the roster if he could stay healthy..if we could get a good reliable point guard through a trade and then be able to get a power forward (Deandre) in the draft it would easily put us in the playoffs and we could be very good contenders in the next couple years

Im starting to move away from DeAndre and more towards Anthony Randolph, what about this, lets draft Randolph at 11, and DeAndre at 13 with a trade… then get a PG next year… I already know who
